Trying to Use Some Colored Cardstock

As part of my "you have too much colored cardstock to order more from SU's new colors" guilt-fest, I decided to make some cards with colored cardstock. The idea was to use up some of my stash so I can order more without guilt.

It didn't work. My effort made no noticeable difference in my stash and involved working WAY outside my comfort zone. All three cards I'm posting today are basically CASE'd from Ashley C. Newell's card on page 36 of Stamp It! (the Display until April 2010 issue). Her version is prettier than any of mine turned out, but then, she used prettier stamps and some yummy satin ribbon.

First up is Hero Arts in turquoise and kraft paper. It's amazing how wrong this feels to me. WHERE IS THE WHITE CARDSTOCK?!?!?! Sigh. I miss it.

Next up is Papertrey in celery and wasabi and kraft. I'm thrilled wasabi is now a permanent color in SU's revamped color families. I love it paired with, you guessed it, white. Heavy sigh.

Last up is another card with Hero Arts on apricot appeal and pumpkin pie and kraft. Of the three, this one is my favorite, even if I do think it would look way better on white cardstock. Those butterflies can do no wrong and begged, absolutely BEGGED, for bling. Who am I to refuse them?

So, I used some colored cardstock, and then immediately made about twenty one-layer cards with white cardstock to cleanse my palate. For those of you who have asked me to use more colored card bases, now you know why I don't do it more often.

LateBlossom likes white. Sometimes I get completely crazy and use ivory or kraft. But colored cardstock? It's like trying to speak a foreign language I never learned. Something gets lost in translation.

Check out Ashley's original in Stamp It! It's totally lovely. She speaks colored cardstock fluently.

  1. You may not feel comforable with colour en masse but it sure doesn't look it. I adore the turquoise and kraft, it is so vibrant. I think one of my million challenge cards has those 2in it - ah yes, Embellish (Ashley Cannon Newell).

  3. You're crazy Susan, these are all so pretty! But why not try using up your stash a bit by layering white base, colour, then white on top. That should make your heart happier ;)

  4. I think they all look beautiful. I really like the tone on tone look and you have pulled it all together wonderfully.

  5. I think you did a lovely job in color! I know what you mean, though -- I can do color, but when I definitely want CAS, it's so hard to NOT use white or another light neutral.
WV - refless: v. portmanteau of "reflect" and "less" - to think about giving away all that clutter, but not actually doing anything about it!

  6. You crack me up, love that you had to cleanse your palette afterwards. I love white too, so I understand....

  7. I really like the "tone on tone" look of all three cards, but you've managed to pull me away from cluttered cards (a bit) If you change direction now .......
    Bring back white!

  10. I do like the cards you made with the colored cardstock, but I also do think you are right...... They would look even better on white....

  11. Just a matter of taste. I like CAS done in colors. White is pretty but I like to mix it up and I do have a paper fetish. GRIN

  12. Oh Susan, I think these are gorgeous! Clearly just a matter of taste?! Would be very happy to see some more of when you are out of your comfort zone, 'cos you still do beautiful cards. Thanks for always sharing so regularly, I look forward to seeing your cards every day although I don't always comment.

  14. Susan,
Love the tone on tone...thanks for the reminder. "Cleansed your color palate" is hysterical, but so you.
I can just imagine you trying to shake off the "icky" of too much color!!

  15. These look great. One of the things I learned in a previous life when I worked with many, many designers (I never became one though!) was that white space does not have to be white (and in fact it should probably be called "clear space"). These still say "Late Blossom" to me. My recommendations on the new colours would be espresso, poppy and concord. All the others (imho) are not different enough from what's already there.

  16. I think you speak colored cardstock much better than you think you do - the cards are lovely! I understand working outside your comfort zone is not easy for you, but believe me, you do it well!

  19. Another reason why I simply adore your posts and your cards. See all the people that give you some love, and I will do the same. Have you tried a white gel pen to just add some pops of white in the card? Too fussy? Maybe...It would be interesting to see.

  20. I think you've done a SPLENDID job using colored card stock Susan! All of these cards are quite lovely :)

  21. The last card is dynamite, I'm guessing because of the colors you used. The other cards, tone on tone, would be my first choice in my "other life" (before I arrived on your blog). I hardly ever used white or ivory in those days. So now I've got me a case of the guilts over the 2 huge cartons of colored cardstock gathering faded edges from sitting untouched, at fifty cents (minimum) a sheet!

You crack me up....."cleanse my palate" is such a pluperfect metaphor.

  22. These cards may be out of your comfort zone but they are beautifully done! You cracked me up when you said you immediately made lots of one layer white cards afterward! Hope you are having a good weekend.

  23. Three terrific versions of the same layout and all so colorful! It is odd to check out your blog and see no white at all. But it's good that you could use some of your colored cardstock.

  24. They are simple and cute, even if it was out of the box for you!

  25. I KNEW something didn't feel "just right" when I got up this morning, but hadn't been able to put my finger on it 'til now ... (grins)

They're great, but, you stinker, I don't HAVE that mag and you didn't include a small scan of the card you CASEd?! Shame!

  26. I don't know about the other readers, but you seem to be able to use colored cardstock as well as you use white or draft! Thanks for sharing, I have lots of new ideas, thanks to you and your use of color! Isn't is great to think outside the box?

  27. I do like all three of these cards, but the butterfly card is my top pick of the three. I so get what you mean -- these would be so nice with the main panel in white, too. But you have done a fabulous job of assauging the coloured cs guilt, haven't you? ;)

  28. Although I think all of the cards look stunning, perhaps you could trade just ONE of the colored pieces for white?? That way you can step outside your comfort zone and use your cs without giving yourself an anxiety attack :P xxtake care

  29. I haven't ever thought of pairing kraft cs with vibrant color-so even though you feel out of your element, I think these cards totally rock! Thanks for the inpsiration.
