A Fishy Carolina Birthday

First of all, thank you all who left comments or sent emails regarding the last post about Karen. Sincerely, thank you.

Second, a happier event is upcoming this July...my uncle Darius's birthday. He's a HUGE University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) fan, something that this Duke graduate in no way holds against him. In fact, I'm far more civilized about his aberrant loyalty than I am about my husband's...Darius doesn't rub my nose in it when Duke loses like George does.

Ah, what does the Bible say about a house divided? George and I just celebrated our 26th wedding anniversary in Hawai'i, so I guess a house divided by shades of blue can, indeed, stand.

But during basketball season...just barely.

Anyway, Uncle Darius has a birthday coming up, so I wanted to make him a celebratory card with a whole lotta Carolina blue. Darius is also the proud owner of a condo at a North Carolina beach, where he enjoys throwing his grandchildren in the surf every summer. Plus, I just got back from Kaua'i and feel fishy myself.

So I used my A Muse stamps to make this punny Carolina blue card:

To make the kelp and solid fish look watery, I slid the ink pads over the stamps. If you look closely, you'll see the streaky effect. I liked it. The stamped panel alone on the blue looked weird, and a dark mat looked gloomy. A white mat gives some dimensional interest and keeps the whole thing nice and light.

The focal point fish is supposed to be Darius. He will smile.

Every now and then, there's a perfect opportunity to customize a card for a particular person by using specific images or color combinations or themes. What is the last card you customized? What did you do?

Supplies
stamps: A Muse
ink: Memento
paper: SU bashful blue, PTI white
accessories: Memento Markers, dimensionals

  2. Delightful card, Susan! The last customized card I made was the broken heart/Band-Aid card I made for my friend with the heart problems. I love being able to personalize for someone special!

  3. No, Susan, I'm not in Durham, but a part of my heart will always be in Perkins Library! I married the military and have moved all over the country, finally settling in Ohio.

  4. I love to personalize cards. My fav is using wedding invitations to make a wedding card. My sister is a

  5. I personalized my dad's Father's Day card - he was a carpenter and avid gardener. Trees were his special love, and he loves telling everyone about the unusual ones he has and where they were transplanted from. I used Tim Holtz' woodgrain embossing folder for the brown main panes, and then stamped and paper-pieced 2 trees for the bottom corner. He loved it!

  6. Been following for awhile, but a terrible commenter, trying to fix that! My last card was done for my friend, a nautical idea based on her home state of Deleware. If you like to check it out: http://www.pearlgateway.com/2012/05/delaware-sunshine-card.html :)

  7. I made a get-well card for a friend who loves thick hamburgers loaded with everything. So I included a photo of that on the card front. He loved it, and it's on his refrigerator door.

  8. Love, love, LOVE that Tarheel fish! I just finished a birthday card tonight for my boss who loves Hello, Kitty. I have never spent so much time on such a "simple" card. This time I had to go with "Done is better than perfect."

  9. The last personalized card that I made was for my youngest son. He has played soccer since he was a little boy. His card was covered with soccer balls and terminology. He loved it. I love customizing my cards.

  11. Great card, Susan. I just finished a card for a friend who celebrated her 60th on an Alaskan cruise. Borrowed stamps for an Eskimo girl standing on a snowy shore and a cruise ship in the background. A friend gave me a beautiful sponged - on - glossy cardstock section for the back piece. Happy Birthday Wendy!

  12. How cute! I love the main picture, of course, but also the little details of 2 layers of white on the blue, with the top layer popped. All the stamps on this card look fabulous. And the colors are great! I regularly personalize anything I get an invitation or announcement for, by using part of it. My favorite is graduation announcements. There's always a school logo or emblem, maybe a raised picture of the school, or something you can use to add to the school colors and made a great congratulations-you-did-it card.

  14. Love the card and your idea for making it look more underwater-ish. I made a customized card this weekend! On accident. I needed to make a card for a friend, rummaged around and around and suddenly the idea of using a rose popped in my head. After the card was made and I was getting ready to send it did I remember that roses are her favorite flower. I'm going to pretend that my subconscious had my back on that one.

  15. I always customize my best friends's birthday-she's a purple-a-holic (?) so the card is always in sides of that regal color!

  17. Very cute card! I'll have to try your seaweed technique sometime. Adorable blue/white fish. :) I enjoy making personalized cards. Just yesterday, I made an unusual one. For over three decades, my parents have been patrrons of a local Mexican restaurant, which celebrated it's 40th anniversary last weekend. They missed the celebration but are friends with the owner and their family. My parents asked me to make a special anniversary card for them. I used festive colored, layered, long banners for the background. I free-handed a traditional, donkey shaped, silhouette pinata to "hang" over them. I used two different PTI sets to stamp the sentiment "Happy 40th Anniversary!" It turned out quite festive and my parents like it very much. They are looking forward to giving the card to John (the son who manages the restaurant.) We will probably all go for dinner Sat. or Sun., at which time they'll give him the card. It was fun to make!
