Inspired by Michelle Bertuzzi

Michelle Bertuzzi had a card published in Card Creations Volume 10 that inspired me so much. Her brilliant use of distressed handwritten text as a background for a sentiment and a sprinkle of butterflies--balanced with a fabulous black bow--resulted in this lovely sympathy card.

Here's my CASification riff on her lovely card....

Obviously, I changed the theme and color scheme. For my handwritten text, I punched a mask using a scalloped circle...that kept the edges from being too regular. I stamped the text background in light pink and then the sentiment in hot pink.

As you can see, there is no ribbon. I tried. Truly I did. It was hot pink gingham and so lovely in my hand. But my bow looked so sad.

So, so sad.

No matter how I tweaked and fussed, it just looked pathetic. I ditched it and added a third butterfly for balance. Then I decided to play with the bling colors...clear on the pink butterflies and hot pink on the white.

And if you don't have that Martha Stewart butterfly punch, go buy it. Right now. It's sublime, and it's so cool that I had the same one Michelle used!

Many thanks to Michelle for creating her masterpiece and inspiring my take on it. I never could have come up with this on my own, and I'm just tickled pink!

  1. I don't comment much, but I'm always inspired by your cards. CAS cards can be so fussy sometimes. The idea is there, and yet, I can't make it come to fruition.

You, however, make it look like cake. :o)

This card is lovely and I love the butterflies. I think it looks grand without the bow. :o)

  2. Your interpretation is lovely! The design stands alone and doesn't need a bow. In fact, I like your version better.

  3. Lovely card - it doesn't need a bow. I marvel at how you take a great idea and then make it better.

  4. Nice case of Michelle's card. I like the butterfly. For seven yrs, I have tried to make decent bows and failed. I haven't completely given up but you'll rately see a bow on any card I make. Hee! :)

  6. Gorgeous CASE, Susan! Love the light pink and dark pink together. And your card doesn't need a bow. In fact, I often find big bows and wide ribbon overwhelm the rest of a card (though Michell's card is lovely). And they don't go through the mail very well as the bows get flattened and squished.

I have those Martha Stewart punches - I haven't used them for ages but you've inspired me to pull them out.

  7. I'm not really fussed by your inspiration card - I think the writing under the sentiment looks too dark and makes it a bit 'messy'. But i really love your take on it. The lighter pink works so well, and I think the scalloped edges made a difference too - great job! M x

  8. I think I like your take on it better anyway, without that big, fussy bow. I love the scallop circle masking idea for text stamps. And yes! That Martha butterfly is to die for.

  9. Love your card but I was so disappointed with that punch when I got it. I wanted it so badly but it's never given me a clean punch. I always ended up tidying up the edges. So frustrating!
