Today, I'm feeling BLUE! And BLUE is beautiful! Blue was my favorite color as a child, and while it's given way to green in my grown-up years, it's still a staple in my wardrobe. I love how it ranges in so many shades, although I am partial to Duke blue. *wink*
The Blue Mojo includes a bag of blue Flower Soft, which I bought (along with five or six other colors) and promptly started ruining paper using it. Sad sigh. Determination paid off, however, and I'm feeling much more flower-soft competent. Am I right?
It's all in the stamp choice. Use this stuff with the wrong stamp, and it'll look silly. Pick something more conducive to its use, and it's hard to go wrong. This card uses Stem Silhouettes and Sincere Salutaions from StampinUp, and a bit of satin ribbon for the knot.

a hunk of torn window screen. I used it to make a screen door on a card looking out into the yard with a cat peering in. The screen door was an open frame on the front of the card and the cat was on the inside panel of the card. I like creating landscapes and scenes. However, with cost of postage am being drawn more and more to the simplicity of your style. Thanks for the inspirations...

Congrats to everyone winning all these yummy goodies! I just LOVE this blue card with the FS! It's so elegant with that satin ribbon! I once used pieces of a mesh garlic bag to sponge white tire tracks on a black background! I know it sounds weird, but it gave me the look I wanted :)

ReplyDeleteIt's probably not that weird, but I often use magazines and advertisements for inspiration for color choices and layouts. I can't think of anything more weird at the moment.
Well, I guess I haven't really used too many different things for inspiration...I need some ideas! Mostly I just use the 'net and all the awesome blogs I follow and I love to check out Creating Keepsakes and other magazines for inspiration.

A Sprint commercial during the Daytona 500 was done in gray, white and a pop of yellow. I loved the cleaness of it and made a card with those colors right after the race!

I think we recieve inspiration from all around us... Whatever we do with our day we might see something and subconciously think "Hmm, that'd be great on a card" and not know where that particular idea has come from ;)
That is my view :)
I must be coffee-deficient this a.m. - can't think of any weird inspiration ... mine normally comes from magazines, blogs, gifts I'm making the card to accompany, wrapping paper, etc.

I was making flowers with scalloped circles punched from a Janet Evonovich book. I was pretty amused when I noticed that one of my flowers was *ahem* pretty racy. We got quite a chuckle out of that. I am saving it for an anniversary card for my husband.

It's so funny that one of your comments above is about a gray/yellow color combo -- I was recently inspired by the same colors, but they came from the cover of a 1959 Macmillan Writers' Guide. The layout is really cool, too!
ReplyDeleteMy other "weird" inspiration is chance -- sometimes I grab a few random items or scraps sitting out in the mess on my desk and make them work together somehow.
Oh, and the card is lovely -- I have some ivory fs somewhere that I haven't attempted yet....
Your determineation definately paid off - awesome flower-soft flowers!! I get inspiration from many places! People who I work with laugh when I see someone's sweater and say "that would make a great card". But I am going to guess that when I use my sons computer screen images for inspiration that is pretty untypical (but it makes him proud!).

ReplyDeleteThe most unusual source I've found inspiration was a clothing tag that was attached to a dress I bought. It was a very unusual shape with a scalloped border and was bright yellow with red dots! In fact, I hung it on my inspiration board! :)
Not too imaginative, but did have an extra calender that had some great glossy absract pictures that I used to make flowers.

Denim blue is my fave! Not many days that I don't wear it. Weirdest inspiration has to be the Tom Lehrer song 'Poisoning Pigeons the in the Park'. Just made an ATC with a Thinker statue and bird poo. Next weirdest would be my Scotch glue bottle - colors and layout for another ATC.

ReplyDeleteI've so enjoyed your giveaways Susan, what a great idea! I think inspiration comes from every where, you never know what will strike your fancy or what will click as an idea. I once used a colleagues tie. It was a diagonal stripe in pinks and greys. Very appealing. Funny thing, I'd probably seen him in the tie a number of times before it registered that it would be great in a card.

Can't think of any weird inspiration - most of my inspiration comes from blogs or sketches. Although there is a onesie of my son's that I just love the colours in and have been thinking of using those colours...

ReplyDeleteIt wasn't that weird I guess but I've seen a shoe box at my neighbor's in cool colors and the make printed on the side and made a layout with those colors... ;-)

ReplyDeleteI can't think of anything too weird I've used for inspiration--I mostly turn to card blogs for inspiration--but one non-card-blog source I've used recently is the blog Cake Wrecks. This is a hilarious blog that mostly features cakes gone wrong, but on Sundays Jen features beautiful cakes gone right. The moment I saw one of those cakes, stars exploded in my brain, angels sang, and I knew I would make a card like it. ReplyDeleteI save my Coldwater Creek catalogs for color inspirations, as I have no color sense on my own. Maybe not wierd, but definitely time and supply saving- much less 'do overs' because the colors don't play well together.

What a pretty, delicate card. I never realized that colors change as we age, until it happened to me. I went from blue to red, to my current green. Brown, however, has been my least favorite all along.

ReplyDeleteI would say my daughter's backpack was the weirdest inspiration I have used. We bought it at Target a few years ago - it has adorable fabric owls on it in the most fun colors!
Well, this is not exactly "weird" inspiration but I saw Alice in Wonderland in 3D yesterday and the colors, textures and patterns in the moving were extremely inspiring! I recommend seeing it!

ReplyDeleteA beach towel - some of those just have the neatest color combos and designs. The one I used was shades of red, orange and yellow that looked like Barougue Motif was stamped around all over it - very summery!

ReplyDeleteMost inspiration comes from online (like Simplicity, of course) but lots from real life as well. I'm surprised by how often I'll find a new color combo while sorting laundry: 2 colors land next to each other in the piles and a future card is born!

I usually just sit down and make a card and get inspired by my supplies or who I am making the card for. You inspired me to be okay with doing CAS cards. I usually felt the needed to have lots of layers, etc - not because I liked them, but so that the person receiving it doesn't feel "ripped off". Your blog helped me the change that. But unless you consider yourself weird...I guess it doesn't count!

ReplyDeleteThe weirdest thing I've used for inspiration would probably be from the splatter on the wall from a laboratory accident. Someone was staining some microscope slides and they dropped the container of dye, resulting in some spectacular patterns on the walls/floor/benchtop. :)

ReplyDeleteThe weirdest thing I've used for inspiration is some packing that arrived from the orient, protecting a gift a friend had sent. It looked similar to fine straw and was perfect at the feet of a rooster image. Maybe weirder than that was some chain I bought to embellish a card with a motorcycle rider image. The chain was the kind used to hold the plunger in the back of the toilet, but was the only one the right size.
I've never used flower soft, looks interesting!

Hmmm... Not sure it is weird but have used a wine cork, and cut it into circles and used them on the front of a card. Won't do it again as was very hard to cut evenly.

ReplyDeleteWhen I first started stamping and needed a background, I actually used the mesh holder from a turkey we had bought for Thanksgiving. It worked so well that I still have some of that red mesh in my craft drawer!! Invention is the mother of necessity, right? I love your blog because "busy" cards give me a headache! Love simple!!
ReplyDeleteNot sure if it's weird, but I used some furry stuff the other day (Is it fun fur? It was white and really fluffy!) Anyway, I paired it up with hot pink and zebra print. It was a great combination!
ReplyDeleteProbably, the weirdest was the fabric backing on some wallpaper I took off my walls. The fabric separated from the wall paper when I took it down. I thought this would be really cool for a Halloween card, it looked like the gauze off a mummy. It turned out pretty good.

ReplyDeleteI guess the weirdest thing I ever used for inspiration was salt. (A challenge on SCS was to use spices on your creation.) I dyed salt with a reinker to make 'sand' for a 'sandy' beach scene. It worked perfectly!
My inspiration is sometimes from my pets. My two glossy black-and-white cats are so gorgeous and elegant (I call them B&W's). One of them sitting next to some tulips inspired a black, white and yellow card. Or black and white with red, or orange, or spring green like the cats sitting in new grass. . . !

Ha, it was some 'art' my DD made. Strangely enough, it was a rainbow painting {and it is beautiful} but it had a huge black storm cloud at the top of the painting and that cloud is what go the juices flowing. Now, I am NOT saying that the card turned out well, but it was inspired by something pretty weird for me
ReplyDeleteI bought an SU set with tool stamps to make cards for the men in my life, but I couldn't think of how to use them until I noticed my husband's pegboard on the basement wall. Weird but perfect! I made rows of holes in the cardstock with the paper piercer and "hung" the tools I stamped and cut out.

ReplyDeleteAnyway, weird inspiration would be from a tie dye shirt I made. I made a pink and orange shirt, completely out of my comfort zone. But I love the color combination so much that we used it for my daughter's birthday thank you cards and decorations.
Beautiful card ... love the texture that the flower soft adds. I know I'm probably too late for the contest, but I still wanted to comment. My weird inspiration came from the bottom of Shaun White's snowboard while I was watching the Olympics. Great graphic letters & images.
