Little Things: Day 6

Today's LITTLE THING is the metallic marker! That simple yet perfect device for putting down a line of opaque metallic finish that lifts an ordinary card into the realm of extraordinary beauty and elegance!

To make this card, I used the cross and sentiment from Everyday Blessings by Papertrey Ink in Memento Grape Jelly. The cross is accented with metallic half-beads, as is the sentiment. The cross panel is edged with a silver Prisma marker.

For those of you who are intimidated by this technique, I encourage you to check out the tutorial I posted a while back. It really is quite easy!

There will be two winners for today's give-away, and each will receive one PrismaColor Premier metallic marker (one silver, the other gold). Remember to enter, you must leave a comment answering today's question on this blog post...email responses to the question will not be counted in the drawing.

Metallic Marker Give-Away Question
What LITTLE THING is tops in your playlist of favorite songs to make you happy? For me, it's the commercial-jingle-turned-pop-hit, "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing." Apple trees and honey bees and snow-white turtle doves. Indeed.

  1. Absolutely gorgeous! The colors, the metallic edging and the simplicity make this an elegant stand out! Top on my playlist right now is a new release song from Francesca Batestelli. It's about all the little messes in our lives and how they can so easily make us miss how big we are really blessed.

  2. Love the way you use those metallic markers. Mine died a few years ago and I still haven't replaced them.

And my happy song is The Honey Tree by Mostar Diving Club: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32iQNYzw-J8 You might recognize it from the Honda hybrid commercials a couple years ago.

  4. Beautiful card. Right now I'm loving Days of Elijah by Twila Paris.

  5. These markers look like a lot of fun. My son recently brought me a jump drive filled with music by Dr. John. I particularly like Afterglow. All the songs have a great beat which keep me moving along.

  6. I love the silver! Never tried one of those pens.

I can't say that I have one favorite, but one that I enjoy singing is "poor dirt farmer" by Levon Helm. My husband and I are into country and bluegrass.

  7. Such an elegant cross! Lovely card.
My favorite song is John Denver's "Sunshine on My Shoulders". I have the story book too, that the grandkids love - it came with the cd. It's a happy/sad/thinking kind of song.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Right now, the song that makes me smile is "Just The Way You Are" by Bruno Mars.... my goal right now is to believe my husband when he tells me the things that Bruno Mars talks about in his song.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Beautiful card... I'm currently enjoying some cheesy Katy Perry when I need a little pick me up.

    ReplyDelete
  10. What makes me laugh in the mornings is to play "Don't worry be happy" remember that one? I'm going to have to try those pens again, I haven't used them i a couple of years. You don't need to send them to me, pass them on to another if you draw my name. I still have three of them to use up. :)

  11. I confess I am not one for listening to songs these days. I do sing to myself however and my current happy song is a children's song...
    SONG
Verse 1. One elephant went out to play, on a spider's web one day,
He had such enormous fun, that he called for another elephant to come.
Verse 2. Two elephants went out to play, on a spider's web one day,
They had such enormous fun, that they called for another elephant to come.
Verse 3. Three elephants went out to play . . .

As you might imagine this can go on for a very long time. Fortunately no one else has to listen to me singing it. The world is rejoicing, lol.

I have a few different styles of metallic pen. There are gold and silver leaf pens which I have mixed luck with. The metallic gel pens are my 'go to' markers just now. Love to make dots with them.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Top song for making me happy? Pachelbel's Canon in D. Every time.

    ReplyDelete
  13. My feel-good happy song is "Today is the Day" by Apollo Sunshine. I love singing along, and it always makes me smile.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Jason Mraz "I'm Yours."

After my husband and I said our "I do's," we walked back down the isle to that song. I cant help but smile every time I hear it :)

    ~Kelly :)

  15. Love those pens. I have used a gold one but never a silver one. I didn't even know it came in silver!

I have so many favorites, but one of them is "I Can Only Imagine" by Mercy Me. It talks about what it might be like when we see Jesus. I love the part about will I dance or fall to my knees. I have made one special request of Jesus and that is that He will hold me and dance with me on the day I enter heaven. Anyway...this song always takes me out of this present realm to one that I will enJOY forever.

  16. I so glad I found your blog. This is how I made my cards in the past. But after seeing cards covered with DP & embellishments of all sorts, I felt my cards looked too plain. I'm happy there's someone other than myself who appreciates simplicity. The first song I like to hear in the morning is I’m Alive by Celine Dione. In fact it's my alarm ringtone.

  17. Love metallic pens and would really like to replace my drying out over-used faithful sidekicks! :)
As for the song that runs through my head and makes me smile? The Newsboys' "In the Belly of the Whale" (from the VeggieTales movie a few years back...Pirates Who Don't Do Anything). Gotta love that song!
Enjoy your weekend and God Bless, <><

  18. Love this idea :) Thanks for sharing it

I love all Jim Reeves songs - reminds me of time back home with my parents when I was small. Even now, when I go to my parents' I always play those CDs and my dad and I sing along! :)

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hi Susan - thanks for the chance of sharing. Your cross card is really gorgeous. My favourite song at the mo has got to be this version of Wayfaring Stranger http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPD_MiiscEY by the beautiful, talented Lexie Stobie. I've known her since she was a tiny, and can't believe that such a wonderfully powerful sound comes out of such a young girl.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Oh, Susan, that card is stunning! I love listening to Michael Buble singing "Just Haven't Met You Yet." Thanks for all the inspiration and ideas you provide on your blog. I enjoy your writing, too!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Wow!! This card is just stunning. I love the cross and the sentiment - very stylish. I agree, metallic pens really can make a huge difference to the finished look.

As for a favourite song - You Do Something to Me by Paul Weller - always reminds me of my wedding day and my wonderful husband.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Well, I am showing my age here, but I love any of Neil Diamond's earlier songs.
Your card today is just stunning

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hmmmmmmmmmmm - I have so many favourites . . . I love BLack Night by Deep Purple, By the way bu the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Sex on Fire by the Kings of Leon and, and ...... the list goes on - rather like those pens will go on and on too!

    Hoping to be lucky!

    Happy Friday everyone

  24. I love silver pens. Used them a lot in the past, but it's been ages since I've used them now.
My happy song right now is "Go Your Own Way" by Fleetwod Mac. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  25. I love the look of those pens but haven't used them myself. Gorgeous. Just love your card.

Along with "Just The Way You Are" by Bruno Mars already mentioned, I love "I'm Alright" by Leanne Wolmack. It just has such a great upbeat attitude.

    ReplyDelete
  26. i love the way you used the pen. i'll have to check out the tutorial!

my favorite pick-me-up song right now is Christ is Risen by Matt Maher. on Tuesday, i will be worshipping with Chris Tomlin and Louis Giglio. can not wait!!

    Jackie from MO

  27. Casting Crowns - Jesus, Hold Me Now. I must look at your tutorial to see how you get the lines straight.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I have not tried the metalic pens, but have been wanting to since seeing your video. My favorite song has to be "I'll Fly Away", everytime I hear it it just puts me in a great mood.

    ReplyDelete
  29. My favourite song is "Annie's Song" either sung by John Denver or James Galway's instrumental version. Don't put me into the draw, as the postage would cost too much. I love metallic edging and have just found the Krylon pens which come in 18ct gold, pale god, silver, copper, and red. As you say, they lift a simple card to new heights. I tend to do my edging freehand, and it looks even better on a deckle or scalloped edge.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I love the simplicity of this card but strange to say over here we do not use too many crosses on our cards...shame on us!
My favourite 'song' would have to be sacred.....'O Lord My God, When I in awesome wonder' - this sends the shivers up my spine, not from fear, but wonder...and I want it sung at my funeral....because it is uplifting and the last verse is full of wonderful surety for Eternity. Please leave me out of the draw - as with Maggie C - the U.K. is too far away!!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Silver and purple.... nice! My favorite happy song is "I'm a Believer" by the Monkees. It takes me back to childhood.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Gorgeous card, Susan! I have edged in gold before but not silver-duh, not sure why.
I usually tune out commercials, but that little bit of country line dance music in the GE commercial gets me every time!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I've always been reluctant to add an ink border, but will have to practice. The results are stunning. I get distracted easily, I enjoy listening to the CD's of bird songs, wind chimes and the like.

    ReplyDelete
  34. This is such an elegant card!
My favorite song today is "Headphones" by Britt Nicole. I feel like a teenager when I hear it, and it makes me happy. In fact, if only you could see my teen cheerleader body dancing to this....IN MY HEAD WHERE I DON'T GET HURT. :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Right now it is the David Crowder Band's "He Loves us"! Love that song! I have to say there is a girl at my church who sings it even better. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Beautiful edging! Looks so professional! I love, love, love the Dailey & Vincent bluegrass a capella CD! It has lots of hymns we sing at
church and a couple of their own!

    ReplyDelete
  37. What a beautiful card, Susan. My first thought was "What a lovely Easter card!" and then I thought.....that would make a great Baptism, Confirmation, or wedding card, too. It's religious, but completely understated and elegant, something not easy to do. The little thing in my mental playlist is "You are my sunshine." It's a song my sisters and I used to harmonize on (along with "Heart and Soul") as we did the dishes after supper when we were little. They're both comfort songs to me!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Such a classic, elegant card.

One of my favourite happy songs of the moment is "Smile" by Uncle Kracker

    ReplyDelete
  39. Checked out the tutorial. I will try the ruler. I usually just eye-ball it. But your does look better. Happy song: "Happy Shinny People" having fun.

  40. Thanks, now I cannot get that song out of my head! I like listening to the oldies station run by our local high school's media class. It's a very good mix and it's located: http://radiotime.com/WebTuner.aspx?StationId=29803& and the call letters are: 91.9 Jeff 92 - WJEF
You can get it on the computer while you work! Thanks for a chance to win, and for continuing to share your talents with us!

  41. Que delicada esta tarjeta!!!
Una de las canciones que más me gustan es "los sonidos del silencio" amo ese tema!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Susan, your card is so elegant! I love the silver border.

The only song I can think of right now I play at Christmas time. It's called: "(It Must Have Been Ol') Santa Claus" by Harry Connick, Jr. Even when the music is not on, I walk around singing that song in my head. Uh oh, it's in my head again! :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. What LITTLE THING is tops in my playlist of favorite songs to make you happy? It would have to be "You are my sunshine" 'nuff said!

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  45. Gorgeous card! I am going to check out your tutorial again because I would be intimidated by trying to use the pen like that.

Tops on my happy play list is Say Hey (I Love You) by Michael Franti & Spearhead.

    ReplyDelete
  46. My favorites by Vince Gill or Alan Jackson always make me happy...I don't much care for the new country singers.

What an elegant card! I've got a few metallic markers but I never get good results with them.

    ReplyDelete
  47. The grape and silver looks very classy together.

Sunflower by Glen Campbell is one of my get happy songs. It also brings back memories of my mom dancing to it in the middle of the kitchen floor!!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Don't Worry, Be Happy is my song that I love to sing.. and also the Barney song.. but I was singing way longer than he has.

    ReplyDelete
  49. i have never used metallic pens, but may need to now... beautiful card! right now my "make me smile" song is francesca battistelli's "this is the stuff". catchy tune and hilarious lyrics!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Love those pens. I forget to use them. I must put them out front and center. I love to listen to I’m Alive by Celine Dione.

  53. Thanks for reminding me of that technique for edging with a metallic marker. I'd meant to try it when you first posted it.

One of my favourite songs is a bit of a mix of happy and poignant - John Lennon's Imagine. It makes me think that it might be possible one day for the world to live in peace.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I love all the songs on KTIS (our Christian Radio station), they make me smile and sing along! (which is a bad thing, if you are in the room ~ lol! A beautiful voice I was NOT blessed with! HA! :)

Love the metalic markers, mine are drying up and would love a new one! Thanks for the chance!!!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Such a beautiful card! The silver is the perfect touch.
The first song that came to mind was Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty. It evokes memories of summertime for me, back in high school driving around with the windows down with that song playing on the radio. It makes me smile.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I know this word is overused here in cardmaking blogland...but this card is STUNNING. :-)

And my go-to happy song will always be "My Savior, My God" by Aaron Shust.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I think of using the metallic pens with trepidation, practice I need! A favourite song that makes me happy is "Pencil thin Mustache" by Jimmy Buffet. That is a beautiful card, reminds me "He is Risen!" ...Rhea

    ReplyDelete
  58. The card is lovely. I listen to classical music and there are lots of pieces that make me very happy. There is one piece by Helen Jane Long that always cheers me up called "Everything". Just beautiful.

Any John Denver song makes me happy...and sad at the same time because he isn't here to sing more.

I can hardly wait to outline a framed design with a silver glitter pen. Awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Your card is beautiful.
I think my happy song is Side by Side. I used to sing it to my Granddaughter when I babysat her. Nothing puts a smile on someone's face faster than hearing a 2 year old belting out "Oh, we aint got a barrel of money".

    ReplyDelete
  64. Awesone card - why is it that clean and simple is so hard for me? You would think it would be a lot easier than a card loaded down with bling and layers - I guess it takes an artistic soul to manage it. I am sure I will be casing this card sometime soon.
Music - how to choose just one. I guess it would be an oldie "What a wonderful world" by Fats Domino. If I hear it, I'm singing and humming it for weeks after - I feel it coming on now.
    Lura

  65. Your card is beautiful!

The song that always makes me smile is "A Whole New World" (Theme from Aladdin) because it was my DH and my song when we got married. After we got married, we had to move 3000 miles away from our family and friends. We were sad to leave, but we also knew we were entering a whole new world and adventure. That was 18 years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Mine changes almost daily but right now my song is "The Cave" by Mumford and Sons!!! I love it!

    ReplyDelete

Wow, this card is stunning. I would say the song that makes me happy is anything (many literally any song!) sung by Colbie Caillat. Her voice is soothing and beautiful, imo. :)

    ReplyDelete
  70. Oh my-so many songs make me happy! I love the old song "Red Rubber Ball" to really perk me up! Love the card, too. <3

    ReplyDelete
  71. Your card is very pretty. I revisited the tutorial and you make is sound very easy. Thanks.

I really don't listen to music very often, but when I do, I listen to a CD of South American hymns that is just music - no words- with some of their instruments. It is very pretty.

    ReplyDelete
  72. This card is simply beautiful! I love the simple cross and the metallic accents add such elegance. Zip-a-dee-doo-da always makes me smile. Actually, it usually makes me sing. That makes me happy but I'm not sure about the people around me!

    ReplyDelete
  73. I was having a bit of a hard time trying to think of haap songs on my playlist, so I read through what others had written. When I read the comment about the Veggie Tales "Jonah" movie, I remembered something. Last week, hubby and I took a quick trip away, and part of the trip included going to a grocery store. What's the big thing on sale everywhere right now? Easter chocolate, especially chocolate bunnies - and in the middle of the store, DH and I broke out in our rendition of the bunny song from the Veggie Tales "Rack, Shack and Benny" - a sure smile-inducer!

    ReplyDelete
  74. hi Susan,
another fun question! I really had to laugh when Jannette mentioned the bunny song from veggie tales! Instant memories! :) Happy Day sung by Kim Walker is such a great happy and positive song to listen to. Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31FuepQj-eo
I just love when she does her little laughs in it. Makes you smile along with her!

    ReplyDelete
  75. I usually mess things up when I try to do a silver or gold edge on a card with a metallic marker. I checked our your tutorial and maybe I just need to use a raised ruler -- wonder if I could just adhere a piece of felt to the bottom of my ruler?? In regards to my current favorite uplifting song, it would have to be "What Are Words" by Chris Medina. The story behind the song about his love and support for his fiancee after her car accident is so very inspiring!

    ReplyDelete
  76. Beautiful card!
Hard to pick a favorite song--Usually what runs through my head is whatever we practiced at choir practice so this week it is Shoutin' Time.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Susan, I have seen the clear glitter pen, but not the gold and silver metallic pens.
You know how you get a song stuck in your head and it aggravates the stuffing out of you? When that happens to me I sing the song: "Sealed With a Kiss" by Bryan Hiland from 1962. That gets rid of the one that I can't get out of my head, and it doesn't stay around to bug me. Hope that makes sense.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Metallic pens are such fun to use! My happy song is Everything I do I do it for you - I have many versions in vocal and instrumental. It goes both ways for me - God's love for me and the quintessential description of a mother's love.

    ReplyDelete
  79. It's hard to narrow it down to just one song, but Sunglasses at Night takes me back to happy times!

    ReplyDelete
  80. Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" always makes me laugh.

My favourite happy-making song is I Just Called To Say I Love You - Stevie Wonder

    ReplyDelete
  84. Another gorgeous card, there are so many songs on my iPod that make me happy! I have one playlist titled "joy"! But I would have to say nothing makes me smile so much lately as my Donny Osmond greatest hits. Especially "Puppy Love"....ahhhh, the memories!

    ReplyDelete
  85. Love your card! Thanks for the link to the tutorial. I've always loved 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' but I especially enjoy Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's version of it.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I'd love to be able to do that...gotta go back to see the tutorial! Happy song is anything that makes me want to MOVE...(I'm a "radio music station listener"; so whenever I hear something with a nice beat, I get up and move!

  89. Stunning card! Right now, my fav song is Raise your Glass by Pink. Who woulda thunk a 53 year old grandma would be listening to Pink?!
    Kegbo

    ReplyDelete
  90. Right now, my 10 year old son is playing "He's got the whole world in His hand" and "He's changing me" on his guitar for the hundredth time today. But it makes me so happy and proud. He wants to be in our church praise band when he goes to middle school. Any song my son plays (though he's just begun to learn)makes me happy.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I find the old Katrina and the Waves tune, "Walking on Sunshine" a real cheery toe tapper.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Old jingles or annoying songs?? Hard to tell sometimes eh? Any old 60's - 70's rock music usually lifts my mood immediately!

  93. my fav song is I'll Always Love you by Whitney Houston. such a powerful love song.

    ReplyDelete
  94. That pen adds a very interesting edge. This is kind of funny but the song I thought of is the little dingle from the Viagra commercial..."Good morning Good morning ......" there is just something about the song, can't speak for the product!!!

    ReplyDelete
  95. That edging is really a nice finishing touch. I am really liking the song "You are my sunshine" lately on one of the dance CD's that we have, so it is a new mix on a old song, just loving hearing it again.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Such an elegant card! I love the touch of bling in the center of the cross.
There are a few songs that, no matter my mood, make me want to get up and dance. One in particular is by the group Underworld, called Two Months Off - there's just something about the beat.

    ReplyDelete
  97. The metallic pens look great! My happy song is My Favorite Things from The Sound of Music.

    ReplyDelete
  98. What a claasy card! Simple but elegant, just my style! One of my songs that always make me stop and smile (a dreamy smile no less) is the old classic, "My Girl by the Temptations". I remember when I first got my drivers license and would cruise with girlfriends around town to that song! Also anything by Nina Simone!! Well, so much for trying to make you think I am in my 40's now!
