Today has two LITTLE THINGS: scallop scissors and dimensionals. I know, I know. Scallop scissors are so old school, so boring, so out of style. But when you use them to round the corners of a raised panel and/or the card base, you get a very subtle yet oh-so-nice rounded edge that can make a huge difference on CAS cards.
By using little snips of SU dimensionals (the best I've ever used) to pop individual flowers and by using the scissors to snip the corners, this very CAS card is so much more finished-looking!
And yes, I did use Smooch in the centers of the flowers for a little flat bling. The branch and flowers are from PTI's Out on a Limb set, and the sentiment is from a limited edition Thank You set from Clear and Simple Stamps.

Share a fun LITTLE THING that resides on a shelf in your home. It can be anything...a book, knick-knack, photo, game, CD, candle, food, towel, trophy, iPod dock, whatever. As I'm typing this, I noticed the Inukshuk that George and I brought home from our 20th anniversary trip to British Columbia. It's such a cute statue...even has a belly button!
I have a looooong shelf in my craft room where I put up some of my most recent paintings/artwork, and in the corner is a little polymer clay sculpture I made of a victrola record player!

ReplyDeleteOn a shelf in the guest bath is tiny teapot given to me by a friend years ago. It always makes me smile & think of her when I see it, especially since we now live in different states.

We had a chess tournament at our house for just the 4 of us in our family. My son ran it and my daugher made medals for everyone. I have my 2nd place medal proudly pinned to the wall near my craft area.
ReplyDeleteIt's a book. I wanted to make a cookbook of our favorite family recipes and got my family involved in creating it. We paired each recipe with a family picture that followed it's theme. For Homemade Ice Cream, we used the picture of my son cranking the handle of the ice cream maker. The meat dishes had the kids showing cattle or hogs from 4-H. My daughter designed the pages using Photoshop. We gave many copies away for Christmas gifts about 3 years ago.

I have a little plastic man (about 2" high) that lives on my kitchen windowsill .... he's baldy and smiling ... and looks EXACTLY like my Dad! Makes me smile every time I notice it!

Have loved your "Little Things" questions and really have enjoyed reading the answers all week. My Little Thing is just one of many favorites on our shelves, but here's what it is. A black bowl with white speckles that is filled with beautiful eggs. Many, many years ago I sang a duet with a gentleman from our Church at the funeral of another member's husband. The widow generously made this bowl of eggs as payment for singing from real, blown-out eggs, covered with gorgeous Japanese Washi paper. They have a shiny coat of something on top of the paper to preserve them. I used to put them out only at Easter but since moving to Illinois 9 years ago, they have a permanent place on a shelf in our hutch. ReplyDeleteEverything is changing regularly on the shelves but there is a doll, a toy cart, printed and assembled by my son who is always there maybe because it is very funny. Depending on how you look it seems that the volume of the head changes from flat to three dimensional. It is a strange thing, but a lot of attention. As that beautiful card today. Overlapping flowers make it special.
ReplyDeleteI like rocks - round, "soft", pretty rocks. They need to fit in your hand smoothly. And they need to have a special visual attraction also. My son went to college at Oswego, so for one Mother's Day he came home with several "special" rocks. These are on my shelf displayed very proudly and are very cherished.

ReplyDeleteI love your card, you make it look so easy to to CAS cards. My favorite little thing is a duck paper towel holder that my now 30 year old son gave to me when he was in 2nd grade. They had a Christmas store one year where they could go and by things for a few dollars.

ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite little things on my shelf is a small, gorgeous, very detailed windmill sculpture that we brought back from The Netherlands. We honeymooned there almost 10 years ago. Needless to say it was a very special time, and a great memory!

I love my "unfashionable" scissors! Lol. I would appreciate you doing a video or picture tutorial of how you cut your corners with scallop scissors. I am apparently a little slow (ha ha) and tried this and ended up with wonky looking corners. Are there different sizes of scallop scissors? Would that make a difference?

The head would screw off so you could pour some out? I have a Siamese cat bottle that belonged to my great aunt. She also had two Siamese cats that roamed around her house when we visited. She is gone now, but this cat on my shelf reminds me of her. :)
ReplyDeleteThis is so pretty and it looks like Washington DC at cherry blossom time, if a simple card can evoke that kind of emotion you know you have a winner. :) On the shelf, i had to think if I had a shelf anywhere, well, I kind of sort of do and I have three home made tiles from Mexico hanging vertically on a wrought iron hanger holder thingey in the Dining room. Makes me think of sunshine all dreary winter long.

I have a little ceramic teapot that an Aunt gave me over 30 years ago. They lived in California and had traveled cross country in a motor home and stopped by our house in South Georgia. She gave me the teapot and I have since kept it out on a shelf at the various places we have lived. She is 94 and still pretty strong willed and sassy ...

ReplyDeleteI have a little ceramic elephant. It's really kind of butt-ugly, more realistic than cute; but I remember it on my grandma's knick-knack shelf for as far back as I can remember. Just knowing that it's been around for longer than me and survived living on the farm with 9 kids and uncounted grandkids managing not to knock it down & break it makes me smile.

I mostly decorate the shelf with hand made cards but I have a pair of crystal feng shui tortoise which was a wedding gift from one of my dear friends that gives me immense pleasure.

ReplyDeleteSuch a spring-y card - like Cherry blossoms. I love my 4 inch crystal bud vase. It is a gift from two former supervisors when they hired me. I had been a temporary employee greeting all the other candidates as they came in to interview and waited weeks for a decision to be made. We are all retired now and still keep in touch.

Oh yes, we have alot of funny things on our shelves, my husband and friends are great at exchanging goofy gifts. One of the best is a minitures ladies leg lamp like the one on the Christmas Story. It is about 24 inches tall and my husband loves it.

Beautiful card. I've always wanted that On a Limb PTI set, but never got it because I have the Just Vine SU set that is so similar. But everytime I see a Limb card it gets me! And yes, I DO think the SU dimensionals are the best! They don't pop as high, and are just more subtle than others I've used. As for the "thing," mine is a 3" high crystal figure of a mom holding a little baby. I've had it forever, and it signifies my kids, and my grands, and it's a cheap little thing I'll never part with!

ReplyDeleteI am wondering if you ever use a corner rounder. I bought this little cheap gizmo and it makes the most wonderful rounded corners -- and they are even unlike the ones I do with scissors.
ReplyDeleteA favorite little thing is a cat shaped ring holder from Mexico -- the tail sticks up in the air and that's where you slip your rings. Its bright colors remind me of taking winter vacations to get warm!
I have a little Reptar figure that sits on my desk by my computer. He makes noise and flashes fire when you roll him. My kids and I were so into "Rugrats" for so many years :) We especially love the "Reptar on Ice" episode. Now that the kids are 20 and 23, it reminds me of gentler, easier times. I love today's card and would like to see pics of how you round those corners with scissors. <3

ReplyDeleteOn a shelf in my bedroom, I have a pint sized clear glass jar with a latching lid that is decorated with dimensional stickers. Inside the jar is some irridescent confetti and a typed list of things that my daughter loves about me. It was my mother's day present from 2 years ago that she made a daycare. The daycare provider interviewed all 6 girls and typed out their words to include in each jar. It's a perfect snapshot of her thoughts at 3 years old.
Thank you Susan for a wonderful week of getting to know each other through our 'small things'. I have so many things on my shelves, old and new, a clock that was my great-grands, and I have grands of my own, and this years school photo's of them. I really must unclutter, would it help make my cards more Simplistic? Thanks again...rhea

ReplyDeleteLovely, elegant card! A fun thing on our shelf is a frog with a stick through it that we brought back from Egypt. By rubbing the stick over the back of the frog, it makes frog sounds. The grandees love it!

ReplyDeleteI have a sweet china vase about 8" high that I was given as a tiny child - it's shaped like an old hollow tree trunk with two steps going up to a door on the trunk and a small white rabbit standing on the steps about to enter his home in the tree trunk. It always reminds me of being a little girl.
I have a shelf around my kitchen above the cupboards and I collect cobalt and milkglass bottles and vases. I love to look up and see them. I just started my collection so there aren't many but I use them too for flowers. I have a favorite and it is a milk bottle I got recently. It's just perfect!

Oh dear. I have so many things on my shelves. I have to say my current favorite is something my mom made for me. She has taken up making little animals out of socks. I know, sounds strange but they are soooo cute! She made me a white mouse and he is the cutest thing! It also has to be the softest sock known to man! He's been in residence about a week and each time I pass him, I can not resist reaching out and giving his a little pat.

ReplyDeleteI will descirbe the things on the top shelf of a little cabinet in my studio. A 8x10 cross stitch picture of a chair surrounded by plants. Two glass apothacary jars. One is filled with spools of silk thread (my grandma's). The other is filled with spools of machine embriodery thread. Both are very colorful. And there are two little clown dolls with ceramic faces I found at a garage sale for $1 a piece. There is probably some dust on there too. I should have paid more attentin to the house cleaning comments. LOL Its been a fun week.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite shelf thing is a cross-stitched piece with bears hugging and it says "Hug often, Love well" on it. My husband taught himself to cross-stitch and made this for me before we were married at a time when we were living a few states apart. I had been cross-stitching for years and made him a few small things throughout our "courtship" so he decided to return the favor.

Love the results of those scallop scissors you use! I never used to be a nik-nak sort of person but it seems to have creeped up on me over the years. Hard to choose, but I have this tiny little kitty, about 5-6 inches, that sleeps on a shelf. She is darling, covered in fur and looks very realistic.

But the thing that stands out most to me among all the books is my beautiful, brushed silver frame that has a very subtle "Together Forever" on the matte surrounding ont of my favorite weddings pictures in it. It makes me smail every day :)

I have a collection of sea stars(Starfish)> I have 3 big ones and a glass bowl with miniature ones on my shelf. It reminds me of the treasures in our world and that each one is different like people.

It is a little cat made out of clay that one of my now grown-up granddaughters made when she was very little. It brings back so many memories.
