OLW166--Christmas Gift Tags

I had so much fun making these two tags for OLW166 on Cheryl's Blog!

The red tag uses A Muse's Nordic Noel set...and a spot of bling. The baker's twine is from Papertrey, as is the card stock, and the ink is SU's real red.

This tree tag uses an old, old stamp from Northwoods (tree) and a sentiment from Papertrey's Sign Language. The ink is Brilliance thyme and poppy, the thread is DMC embroidery floss, and the paper is Papertrey' white. The Doodlebug white glitter was applied with a Quickie Glue Pen.

The corner punch for both tags comes from StampinUp.

I've got some small rolls of nice, heavy, white wrapping paper and red ribbon to use these with. So exciting!

Almost makes me want to start Christmas shopping.

One-Layer Wednesday 82: Swirly Fun

This week's One-Layer Wednesday Challenge is to use a swirl! I added an extra challenge to mine by using a swirl on a dude birthday card...super cool but not necessary. ;)

To keep the greens in the same tone, I off-stamped the bamboo ink from the definition stamp and swirl before stamping on the paper.

One-Layer Wednesday 74: Red and Pink

This week's One-Layer Wednesday challenge is to use red and pink...and ONLY red and pink...on a white card base.

Any shades of red and pink will do, so feel free to use Bravo Burgundy or another dark red as a substitute for black or brown (as I did on yesterday's card).

Also, your card need NOT be a Valentine's Day card. Some people don't like Valentine's Day. I get that.

One-Layer Wednesday 72: Variations on a Sentiment

This is today's second post. Please scroll down to see the first.

This week's OLW expands on my strategy for making lots of Christmas cards fast without mass producing. There are three requirements in addition to the use of a single layer of card stock:

1) use ONLY a sentiment stamp on your card...no other stamps or embellishments allowed!

2) use a NON-STANDARD size for your card

3) make at least two cards using the same stamp that vary something (color, type of ink, technique, placement of the stamp, size of card)

NOTE: There are no limits to the theme for this challenge, so if you've finished your holiday cards, consider making thank-you cards (you know you're going to need them!) or whatever theme you find most useful.

I got a little carried away with this and love the results, especially because they make me cease regretting the purchase of this stamp from Hero Arts. It's beautiful, but too big for a standard size card. Giving it the extra space to breathe makes a huge difference.

All four of my cards are 4.25" x 7" and will fit into standard 5" x 7" envelopes.

Fuzzy for a Reason: Red Doodlebug Flock and Essential Glue Pad

Some of you may find this challenge particularly difficult because a single sentiment looks so excruciatingly clean and simple. Look for really interesting sentiments in your stash, and then think how you could make it even more interesting with colors, placement, shape of card. If you must, consider embossing lines to frame your sentiment, masking and sponging, using resist techniques, etc. Just don't use any other stamps or embellishments.

If this kills you, remember you can always photograph the unembellished version for the challenge, then add whatever embellishment you feel necessary. ;-)

2. Use only one sentiment on a non-standard card size (or shape), and create at least two variations of the card. NO OTHER STAMPS OR EMBELLISHMENTS ALLOWED!

One-Layer Wednesday #66: Get Inspired by Janelle

This week's One-Layer Wednesday Challenge is to get inspired by blogger Janelle!

This is an easy one, folks!

Janelle and her blog came to my attention a few months ago. She lives in my hometown, not far from the very house in which I lived, so I feel like she's family. We Southerners are that way, you know. Shortly after I added her blog to my reader, however, she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Now, in addition to being a source of inspiration through her crafting, she's become an inspiration for how she lives her life and faces this challenge as well.

This week's challenge is to poke around her blog and find inspiration however you wish. She includes photos from her life as well as her crafting, so absolutely everything on her blog is fair game for inspiration. You can choose to copy a layout, CASify one of her more layered creations, play off a color scheme, pick up a theme (she loves cupcakes), or use a technique/product/style she spotlights.

I have two cards to share. The first is based on one of her many one-layer cards:

I took her idea of the 3/4 border across the card used as a ground for an image. My book was a bit too large for the scale of the card (much bigger than the bird she used), so I scooted it off the side and added just a touch of color with a Memento Pear Tart marker. Then I added a sentiment where she did. LOVE how the elements relate to each other here. (Stamps by Papertrey)

I giggled when I finished this card. It makes me so happy...and I never would have thought of this arrangement without seeing Janelle's card. That sort of inspiration ALWAYS makes me giggle with glee.


My second card is based on a photo from her trip to the Museum of Modern Art (scroll down to see the picture of a couple of Mondrian's paintings).

I couldn't even add a sentiment to it. It's just so much fun and doesn't need to say anything at all. I've been inspired by Andy Warhol and Picasso in the past, but I can't remember ever channeling my inner Mondrian. I created this with Papertrey's Faux Ribbon set, a couple of post-it notes for masks, and Memento markers.

OLW63: We're Back, Baby!

This week's OLW is to make a one-layer baby card...and there's a give-away, too! Check out Jennifer's blog post here for details of the A Muse product pile that she and Krystie Lee are giving away to a random particpant in the OLW63 challenge. Oh, my.

Now, I wish I had some appropriate A Muse stamps for this challenge, but mine are all ocean/beach/dude stamps, a deficit I will be correcting on my next order.

Instead, I decided to get back to my roots in stamping with a very old stamp and a little heat embossing. This congratulations stamp is from PSX (which sadly went out of business years ago). It's also one of my earliest stamp purchases. I used ColorBox pigment inks and PSX silver pearl embossing powder (which joined my stash before 2003...that stuff lasts forever!).

The boy card was stamped in Royal Blue ink. The silver pearl embossing powder softened the blue to a lovely shade appropriate for a baby card.

I tried the silver pearl over a dark red, but that didn't give me the soft pink I wanted, so I used a pink ink, which came out lighter once embossed.

Photographing the EP up close proved difficult, but you can get some idea from this shot how the pearly sheen of the embossing looks. Look at the mid-ground of the photo for the most accurate effect.

Announcement Regarding OLW

Jennifer and I decided that, given everything the two of us have going on in the next month, we're putting the OLW on hold until September 7. Don't worry...we'll come back with something extra-special!

Still not crafting or writing anything longer than the occasional FB status comment, but I can't stand it and will try to make something Thursday.

One-Layer Wednesday 62: Make It Personal--Edited

Edited to Add: Several people asked where I got the state map stamp. It's from Rubber Stampede, USA Map, A17576. I think I picked mine up at Hobby Lobby.

This week's One-Layer Wednesday Challenge is to Make It Personal. In other words, make a card for a particular person that is custom designed for him or her. You might use the person's favorite colors or a favorite image (such as a frog card for a friend who collects frogs, or an iris because it's your mother's favorite flower). Perhaps your brother's birthday is coming up. Whatever you do, make it personal for someone special...and then send them the card!

My card is for my husband. He was in the USAF for twenty years, which means we've lived all over the United States. I decided to use this map of the States and color all the states in which we lived. The sentiment, from Mark's Finest Papers, sums up how I feel about all that shuffling around.

My, that's a lot of ground covered! And by the way, George loved the card.

One-Layer Wednesday 60: Quick Layers of Ink

This week's OLW challenge is to make quick and easy cards with nothing but layers of ink by overlapping the stamped images and/or sentiment. The idea here is to practice whipping up a quick card or even an easy card set at the last minute with just ink and cardstock!

Come on. You KNOW you've been caught needing a card or gift and having next to no time to produce it. Here's your chance to eliminate the sense of panic and feel confident that you CAN respond with a GREAT card with just a moment's notice any time you have a need!

In a pinch isn't the time to reinvent the wheel, and for this challenge, you can't use techniques like masking or sponging...they'd just slow you down! Stick to layouts that work for you, too. Some things that make these types of cards more interesting include fun color combinations, textured or natural cardstock, strong images, asymmetry, and plenty of white space.

I used my Grunge Me set to make these two cards. The first takes just two stamps in bright, punchy colors and puts them in the lower right "sweet spot" of the card (the place where imaginary lines dividing the card into thirds meet). The bright blue sentiment overlaps the grunge circles by about a third of its length, which lends nice balance to the focal point and helps it look deliberately placed, not accidental or random.

The second card uses three stamps overlapping in gray, black, and a punch of bright blue. The right angle of the sentiment and vertical blue element is softened and balanced by the random spatter background.

Layering ink adds interest and takes WAY less time than layering cardstock. So whip up some easy, peasy, QUICK cards this week!

2. Make a card that layers ink. USE ONLY STAMPED IMAGES AND/OR SENTIMENTS. No masking, no sponging, no embellishments of any kind!

One-Layer Wednesday Challenge #59...I Am an Idiot (Edited)

Jennifer and I arranged a month ago that I would post OLW59...and I promptly forgot. So of course, it's late going up. Sorry, folks. I totally dropped the ball.

Before I go into it, let me say you all did an AWESOME job with OLW58. I'll finish leaving comments today (I'm getting better about that!), but seriously, you all ROCK!

Here is OLW59, and I will come up with a card later today to share. OLW59 is an inspiration challenge based on this photo I stole from Pinterest:

Now, I know some of you are intimidated by inspiration challenges. Let me remind you that the inspiration piece is just a starting point. You can take your own interpretation of it in any direction that you want. For instance, with this picture, you might use a jar and flowers image, just the colors, a grid of circles, flowers without a jar, a ribbon wrapped around your card, a wood-grain background, a collection of something other than flowers,  etc. Really, there's so much you can do with this picture. Don't let my list limit you!

Edited to Add my Cards:

First up a tidy arrangement using Gracious Vases...my PTI order arrived today! I used crystal effects on the vase and three yellow blings on the flowers (they look too dark in the photo, thought).

Next, a whimsical thank you card based on the grid of the jars in the photo. The flowers were arraned to form a triangle, and the thanks sentiments are from Clear and Simple, Papertrey, and Hero Arts.

This week's One-Layer Wednesday is to use yellow, orange, and aqua on a card. These are such summery, fun colors, and I'm sure y'all will come up with all sorts of fun ideas for them.

I used some of my new A Muse stamps, and watercolored them with SU inks and an aqua painter. Since I didn't have aqua rhinestones, I simply colored some clear ones with a Bic marker to match the ribbon.

One-Layer Wednesday 56: Father's Day

Before we start the OLW discussion, I just want to thank you for your fun comments on yesterday's post. I was howling at the "horny" misunderstanding and especially at Lu C's comment. OMGosh, the pear jokes never get old, do they? *giggle*

Okay, back to business!

This week's OLW challenge is to make a card for a special father in your life...your own, your children's, or a father figure who is special to you.

This card will go to my uncle Darius. He and my grandfather walked me down the aisle at my wedding. Darius taught me how to turn a cartwheel, do a penny drop on uneven parallel bars, and swim. He also grills a mean steak. He's been a godly, strong, stable, solid influence in my life, and he taught me how to climb trees, so Papertrey's tree from Father Knows Best seemed perfect for his card.

How-To Tips: This card is deceptively complex. First, I used the square frame from Papertrey's Framed, but altered it by expanding the opening for the sentiment using a ruler and post-it note. The sentiment is from Hero Arts. Then, I stamped the tree in Memento Bamboo and Rich Cocoa on PTI's natural cardstock. The tree looked, well, boring, so I used colored pencils (Prisma olive and sepia) and a clear blender pencil to add shading and interest. LOVE this easy technique for enlivening simple block images, and if you'd like, I'll do a tutorial on it.

One-Layer Wednesday 54: Baby Cakes

This week's One-Layer Wednesday Challenge is to get inspired by these fabulous Sunday Sweets on the Cake Wrecks blog to make a baby card. I chose the last cake for my inspiration:

Some of you have told me you are intimidated by inspiration challenges, but a way to make it easier is to look at the "pieces parts" of the inspiration cakes, not the whole cake. Is there a single design element that appeals to you? Perhaps it's the color scheme, or an image, or a border element that stands out for you. Take just one or two of the elements you like and see what you can do.

Don't be afraid to mess up, either. I dorked up my first attempt, and the mistakes in it resulted in a much better card the second time around.

But please don't snip your pinky finger with scissors when cutting ribbon like I did. Ouch.

For my card, I used the harlequin debossing on the bottom and added pearls all over the design, not just a row at the top. I moved the ribbon up from the bottom, too.  The bow was made with a Bow Easy, and the blue ribbon is taped down on the inside neatly using scor-tape. I didn't put tape under the ribbon on the front so I could tie a piece of string to gather it under the white bow. I originally made a card with the pink and green of the cake, but I didn't like the way the bow turned out, so I changed the colors to blue (because I had plenty of blue pearls!) and white.

OLW53 Home Sweet Home

Blogger messed up my Wednesday and Thursday posts. I've recreated them, so if you read Simplicity in email, you've probably already seen the two posts below this one. This one is new for Friday.

The OLW this week is over on Jennifer's Blog, and it's to make a new home card with two different colors of ink. I have no idea if my card for OLW53 will count, seeing as my two "colors" of ink are white and close to cocoa, but I LOVE how this card turned out anyway!

I used a kraft card base (I KNOW!!!! ME!!!!) and stamped the row of houses from Hero Arts in close to cocoa, masking the big house so it didn't ink. Then, I inked just the big house in white SU craft ink and stamped it using a stamp positioner. The cloud is from Up, Up, and Away and the little scalloped border is from Faux Ribbon (both sets from Papertrey Ink). The congratulations sentiment is from Sign Language, also by PTI.

So it took three clear sets from PTI, one wood-mounted rubber stamp from Hero Arts, and ink from StampinUp to make this card.

I love my stash!!!

OLW52 Round and Round

This week's One-Layer Wednesday Challenge is to use a circle or multiple circles on your card. You can get really creative with this. For instance, the centers of some flowers are circles, brads are circles, pierced holes are circles. All those would count. Or you can make a round card, punch a round window into a card, or accent your card with bit of polka-dot ribbon. I'll bet y'all can think of LOTS more creative ways to incorporate circles into a ONE-LAYER card.

My sample for today is one of my favorite cards I've made lately, mainly because it's about as minimalist and clean as a stamper can get. One thing I've been reminded of this week as the Featured Stamper is how not everyone is clean and simple. Some people actually cannot NOT layer and embellish. I salute them and love looking at their art. But for me, this card is what I'm all about: white space, clear message, clean edges, pretty colors, not an embellishment or layer in sight.

This card uses the color challenge at SCS last week: baja breeze, bashful blue, certainly celery. And yes, there's a tiny triple circle on it...one of the flower centers for the cute flower in Papertrey Ink's Paper Tray set.


I did improvise a bit with the set. The all-caps YOU is actually from a stamp that says YOU'RE. The stand-alone you in the set is lower case. I wanted the whole sentiment to be in caps for balance, so I masked the 'RE with a small post-it note, inked the YOU, removed the post-it (don't forget to do this...like I have!), and then stamped.

I got the perfect alignment here with the gridded acrylic block and the help of a pencil-drawn line. First, I stamped the whole thing on scrap paper, and measured how wide it was. Then, I drew a pencil line on the card where I wanted the sentiment to be (slightly above the middle) and marked the width of the sentiment so it was exactly centered. Then, I stamped the THANK with the T lined up on the left-hand mark, stamped the YOU so the U was lined up with the right-hand mark, and then stamped the circle in the center between the two words.

Wow, that took a lot of words to explain.

OLW51 Three of a Kind

When I read the OLW51 post Wednesday on Jennifer's blog, I collapsed in hysterical laughter. By entirely freaky coincidence, late Tuesday night when I could not sleep, I made a set of one-layer cards that vary the color but use the same stamps and layout. There are two each of three colors for a set of six. This is one of the options for Jennifer's OLW this week!

So there you are. I'm psychic.

These three cards are part of my NEW RESOLUTION. That's right. I finally settled on a follow-on for my Ues-Every-Image-Stamp resolution. Now, I'm going to use every set to make at least four different layouts. If the set has reasonable sentiments (as in, NOT kind thoughts, cherish, or puppies poop rainbows), I can only use those.

Doesn't that sound like a cool challenge? Well, it sounds cool to me.

The idea came to me when I realized how little I'd used this set (Papertrey's Paper Tray). It's a fabulous little set, one of the first Papertrey sold, and perfect for the graphic, clean style I love. So many sets have little stamps, like the line in this one, that aren't exactly images (more like elements) that I almost never use. Also, while most sentiments in the set are ones I don't use that often, the Happy Birthday, Thank You, and With Sympathy stamps just haven't been used enough.

The new resolution encourages me to make use of sentiments and those little elements in sets without mandating it. I don't want to be told what to do...even by myself, LOL!

So, I'm psychic and resolute. And I laugh at pears. Now you know everything about me.

One-Layer Wednesday 50: Thankful for the Good Ol' Days

This week's One-Layer Wednesday challenge is sort of the opposite of the OLW49. We used new rubber last week, so this week, I want you to pull out an old rubber stamp (or photopolymer, if you prefer) that hasn't seen love in a while. Dust it off, ink it up, and make a one-layer Thank You card with it!

This is an old Anna Griffin floral stamp that I've had for at least seven or eight years. It's really not my style, but stamping anything in green works for me these days, and I love how this turned out with the brown sentiment. The sentiment is newer...from Hero Arts.
