Kraft Week Day 4: Vintage Craft

GULP!

Vintage.

I don't know....

After perusing a bunch of magazines for inspiration for this challenge, I broke out in hives and wanted to throw up. So I went shopping (natural response, don't you think?). I got this crazy idea that I needed to use something from the trim department. JoAnn's has beautiful lace and trim, so I bought a few different ones, went home, and got to work.

A few things I learned. Trims are soooo pretty, but they are really thick. You can't wrap them around a one-layer card like you can with grosgrain or satin ribbon. Also, the cut ends of many trims unravel, so cutting them off on the edge of the card NO WORKIE!! This means you must wrap them on a panel that's popped up on dimensionals. In some cases, a double layer of dimensionals is necessary to prevent weird bulges.

Oh heaven above. Can you just feel us moving further and further away from CLEAN AND SIMPLE? Uh-hu. It's all Mary Dawn's fault. Blame her.

I'll leave the details of my angst and panic and heart palpitations and cursing of Mary Dawn to your imagination and say this: no matter how NOT simple and NOT clean today's card is, I LOVE IT.

Yes, it doesn't look like I made it, but that's not the point. The point is, I DID MAKE IT. AND IT FELT WONDERFUL....

to do something like this once.

Never again.

Amen.

Give-Away Reminder: Make sure you leave a comment on today's post here and on Mary Dawn's blog My Pink Mexico where she is posting a GAWGEOUS vintage kraft Mother's Day card to maximize your chances to win our give-away of a Big Bite and $25 gift certificate to Papertrey.

How I made this card: The trim-wrapped panel was sponged with Vintage Cream ink from PTI (love that stuff) and popped up on a double layer of dimensionals. The stamped vintage cream panel is stamped and inked with a pale pink. It is also popped, but on a single layer. The top prima is attached to the paper with the brad because I thought one would do, but once I attached the stamped panel, the single prima looked stupid. It needed company. So I attached the second prima with a glue dot. Looks much better because the two brown brads form a visual triangle with the brown sentiment.

Supplies
stamps: PTI (sentiment), SU Letters from Friends
ink: close to cocoa, VersaMagic pixie pink, PTI vintage cream
paper: PTI kraft, vintage cream
accessories: trim, dimensionals, prima flowers, brads, sponges

  2. Susan... you always make me smile when I read your blog. Thank you. :-) And I love your vintage card because it still has that CAS feel. It's a perfect balance of the two. You rock!

Nice job...glad you survived the experience! The trim is lovely, and I admire your determination to use it...and your ability to make it work so well!

  5. lovely card - the pink with the kraft is so good.

    ReplyDelete
  6. You are way too funny, and wonderful you for stretching beyond your boundaries to create a beautiful card! So, is the PTI Vingate Cream ink work like Chalk Ink? Can you stamp images with it and actually see it?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Wow - multiple layers, bulky trim AND vintage, all in one beautiful card! It's fun stepping outside of the box every now and again, isn't it? :)

    ReplyDelete
  8. This is so gorgeous, and somehow still simple. :)

  9. Okay now anytime there is a mishap at my craft desk my response will be NO WORKIE! And I love a blog post that can work in the phrase "weird bulges". Thanks for the giggles this morning.

The card, BTW, is a beauty!!

  10. wow Susan!! I am so impressed at how beautiful this is! I know you love CAS but there is a layering gal in you who needs to get out once in a while (despite the cursing that might happen!! LOL)

Can't wait to see what is in store for the last few days.....

  11. Beautiful, simple vintage. Good job! :)

    ReplyDelete
  12. I LOVE this, and I have to respectfully disagree with you, it still is clean and simple.

So what if it has a few layers, they are not fussed over, not over embellished, there is beautiful "White" (Kraft) Space everywhere. It's stunning (and yes... vintage too!)

    ReplyDelete
  13. Wow. I'm quite gobsmacked... This card is so pretty yet it's not so simple! A daring challenge for you Susan in which you have done very well :) The vintage trim and that stamp are simply gorgeous :) x

  14. OMG, what fun! I always read the entire post prior to looking at the picture of your card! I was expecting FRU FRU out the WA ZU!!!! lololol.... In MY humble opinion, this is still SO cas!!! Beautiful card! Off to visit 'Mexico' now!

  15. All that angst and look how pretty! Kinda makes me want to look for that lace I bought... hmmm.... for some inspiring project. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  16. gobsmacked, wa zu, angst, what a unique bunch of paper people on your list. Anyway, this card is
    supercalifragilisticexpialodocious.

  17. So glad you stretched a bit for this challenge. That has to be the cleanest, simplest, vintage card I've ever seen! Great job capturing the essence of vintage without going too far!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Simple vintage. Despite the angst, it was a learning experience. And that is why I am here at your blog every morning!

    ReplyDelete
  19. My gosh you've branched out, Susan! This is a lovely card, even though it's really not you. I admire your courage and determination to try something different. You did, and it's beautiful. Now, I'd choose your very own style hands down, but this is a lovely departure and you made it work. It's vintage, and layered, but still has a lot of "you" in it. Good job!

    ReplyDelete
  20. So lovely. Not many folks can venture outside of their comfort zone and then end up with something so successful and beautiful. Well done you!

    ReplyDelete
  21. The results can be wonderful when we are challenged outside our norm... thanks for sharing your thinking process while creating ~ sometimes that is just as inspirational as the card itself!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Very lovely card!

It's scary stepping out of our comfort zone, and you certainly did. And you survived!! lol

I challenged myself last night to make an anniversary card for my husband. I did it. Hope he likes it.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Nope, I think you're wrong. It IS clean and simple...AND vintage too.
And it is absolutely lovely as well! Wonderful card...absolutely wonderful!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Oh, I feel your angst! But it was worth it. Your card is simply beautiful. I love the vintage look.

    ReplyDelete
  25. It feels sooooo gooooooood to go out of your comfort zone from time to time, don't you think? Especially if it makes you go shopping! ;-) Love your card - some dimension never hurt anybody, as far as I know...

    ReplyDelete
  26. This is sooooo not you but pretty none the less. It made for a cute story.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I know you're not comfortable doing this kind of card but, my goodness, you did it and it's wonderful! In my eyes, it's still CAS and gorgeous!! I love the lace you used - so beautiful.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I totally think you pulled off the clean and simple still! It is gorgeous and you did a fabulous job. Impressive! I would have walked away from a vintage challenge - so good on you!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Love the card and the trim is beautiful. You are very funny and i smile at your wit this early midwest morning.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Well it's awesome!! SO different, yet so you! Love it.
    Love the writing as well!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. This card is gorgeous! I wouldn't have the first clue on where to begin on a vintage card. Your's is beautiful.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Your card is beautiful. This week you have done so well!!! I'm kinda sad that this week ends tomorrow!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Just thinking about working with that bulky trim gives me hives! Didn't think it possible to combine vintage with clean and simple, but you pulled it off. Congrats!! Susan G.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Heehee, you are so funny. I had the same issue with another card I made this week....the side with the lace on it is sticking up like a sore thumb. Oh well. You did a fine job here, and your lace is beautiful! So is the card!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Very pretty--I like the layout and the trim.

    ReplyDelete
  36. this card is wonderful!
good for you for sticking with this, and creating a perfectly simple and vintage card.
i've said it before, but it bears repeating..............
    YOU ARE AMAZING!!

    thanks,soo

  37. It doesn't look like you struggled at all with this card and it still looks fairly clean and simple as well.

    ReplyDelete
  38. You're so talented! And so funny! I love visiting your blog every morning!

    ReplyDelete
  39. That's it -- all my "weird bulges" are due to "excess embellishment"! ROLF!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Har. Weird bulges. Well, we all have them...
Anyway, one quick tip for using trims on OLCs (or non-weirdly-bulged layers) is to trim them carefully and then hit the edges with either fray-check (for sewing types who keep it around) or clear nail polish (for the rest of us). It might not work for something as complex as the lovely trim on this (also lovely) card, but it works well otherwise.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I love the trim - and good job stepping outside the box! Very classy card!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I love the 2 layers. Regarding the bulge problem, fray check works for me. I highly recommend it.

  43. What gorgeous vintage trim and a beautiful card! WTG!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I disagree, it is CAS! I must say I feel your pain - trying to work outside your comfort zone is so much like hard work, but in this case well worth it! Heather:)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Shopping is great for your creativity.

    ReplyDelete
  46. But it's so pretty! Trim can be a lot of work, but oh, so worth it. Last year I received a large grocery bag full (!) of various trims from a clothing/accessory line. Full! of entire rolls of double satin 1/2"& 2", lacey trim with sequins and what-nots. Thanks for inspiring me to use them - they are too lovely to dust :)
BTW, I have tinted several lengths with Glimmer Mist - yummy results!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Such a beautiful card, Susan, love that trim. I can see how it would give YOU hives, but stop scratching long enough to pat yourself on the back - you got vintage just right!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Gorgeous! Love the trim and the sponging. It's all perfect.

Very well done! :) It's fun to try new things even it's not going to be your new go-style.

  50. Way to work outside your comfort zone. BTW, I gave you a shout-out today on Joan's Paperlicious post about blog "hyping." I really, really enjoy reading your blog. It's evident that you love this hobby of ours and you continue to entertain and educate all of us. And while you may not represent a particular company's products, I have purchased stamps I've seen used by you. Most recently, it was the Hero Arts large fern and coffee cup. Keep those great posts coming. I look forward to reading them each day!

  51. Ok Honey, its called "A Challenge" for a reason..;) Its scary to step outside our comfort zone and you may not like everything you put out, but remind yourself its only paper and it doesn't define you as a person. We love all your stuff!

  52. I agree that some trims are just too thick to use on cards easily. The card gets too thick and cumbersome. You did a nice job with this.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Fantastic! I have been wondering how to incorporate thicker laces...never thought of pop dots. We are growing with you through this process - keep up the good work!

    ReplyDelete
  54. you're too cute, you little scaredy cat. YOU DID IT!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Good job going outside of your comfort zone! I myself would be very scared to try vintage! Oh, and too funny that you went out to buy something specifically to make this card. :)

    ReplyDelete
  56. I think it's still fabulously clean and simple!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Glad I read the comments before posting my own, because now I know I'm not alone in thinking this is still clean and simple. Beautiful, unique and classic, too.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I ADORE this card! And I also think it is still very clean and simple. Your commentary is hilarious by the way - I am giggling in my office like a schoolchild.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Beautiful card! Now I know that vintage can be clean and simple too.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I think you have stepped out of the box onto another planet! I like how you used the trim and I love the colors.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Not sure exactly what's happening, but it looks green? Since you say you're using kraft, I'll trust you! :)

    ReplyDelete
  62. Beautiful card....very different for you...but I like it.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I'm not a huge fan of vintage but as always, you pulled it off. Beautiful!

    ReplyDelete
  64. So elegant. You've done it again! I love your cards...

    ReplyDelete
  65. .. that's why i love making cards and things myself.. my mood, a challenge, the recipient's personality - can all affect the end result. I like that you have still captured your CAS style - love the raised panel edged with cream ink.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Way to step outside your comfort zone, Susan! Your card is so beautiful!!

    ReplyDelete
  67. How very brave and courageous you are! Congratulations on stepping away from your happy place. The result was worth it, I think!

    ReplyDelete
  68. Reading Mary Dawn's blog, it sounds like YOU suggested going vintage today. Could it be true? :P However it came about, the result is very pretty. Another card that's not your style yet is at the same time! I'm almost sad that tomorrow's the last day of the challenge!

    ReplyDelete
  69. I guess I wouldn't normally think of vintage and kraft, but this looks stunning!

    ReplyDelete
  70. This is so unlike you! But I really like it :)

    ReplyDelete
  71. gorgeous card! love that lace trim!

    ReplyDelete
  72. This just proves that you can make vintage CAS!!! This is so beautiful!! You rocked this challenge!

    ReplyDelete
  73. Look at you stretching those boundaries! Looks great!

    ReplyDelete
  74. All the effort paid off! Don't worry, you won't have to do it again unless you want to.

    ReplyDelete
  76. It's gorgeous!!!! And well done for not screaming and running for the hills. :)

    ReplyDelete
  77. Ya know, I've branched out from C&S a couple times before but I've never actually SENT one of those vintage/collagey cards. I just can't go to the "other" side...

    ReplyDelete
  78. Love this one! You've inspired me to get out the paper lace and make a kraft card, too. Thanks, Susan!

    ReplyDelete
  79. I enjoyed reading about your lace and trim shopping adventure! I really love your beautiful finished card ... even with the layer of pretty trim you kept it CAS!

  80. I have the same reaction to "shabby" as you do to "vintage"!! it's all part of the creative process...with great results!! (funny how that need to throw up makes us need to shop...then again, just breathing makes me need to shop!)

    ReplyDelete
  81. This is absolutely drop-dead gorgeous! Awesome card.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Really love that shade of green, it's one of my favorites. Nice card!

    ReplyDelete
  83. Great Job! Vintage is not something I have ever been able to do. But you did a great job and kept it CAS.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Love, love, love it! That ribbon is beautiful! :0)

    ReplyDelete
  85. Very pretty. I may have to go shopping!

    ReplyDelete
  86. I love the combination of colors and the fact that your card has the vintage feel but is not stuffy/cluttered. Great job!

P.S. If you're inclined to use more of your trims on future cards... There are several brands of 'fray ender' products that you can use on the ends of the trim-liquid, dries clear, and actually does stop ribbon and trims from separating. I think another trip to JoAnns might be in order :->

    ReplyDelete
  87. Never again? Really? Well, it turned out beautiful!

    ReplyDelete
  88. Wow! This is sure different for you, but none the less, it is well crafted and stunningly beautiful.
I tried a vintage card and, no, it did not look like anything I usually make, but it also became my favorite card. I guess much like the labour that delivered my children, when you work that hard for something, you love it beyond reason.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Love the trim! You did an excellent job on this card, and it still looks like you, a little. It is simple and absolutely beautiful. thanks for sharing.

    ReplyDelete
  90. That is pretty trim and I like the addition of the flowers. I have a lot of trim left over from my sewing days but have never been able to use it for the same reason you mentioned - bulkiness. I have a hard time adding too much bulk to a card because I want it to be simple and cheap to mail.

    ReplyDelete
  91. They had to do CPR on me here at the public computer station. Susan used girly trim!! It's love-er-ly! I'm hearing a tune from My Fair Lady........

  97. I love the white highlights of this card. Kraft cards - nice.

    ReplyDelete
  98. I love how you edged the mounting piece in white! It really makes it pop!

    ReplyDelete
  99. It's beautiful. I am not a vintage person but I think you totally rocked this. Much better than I and think you still managed clean and simple! Kudos!
