WOW! Jen's inspiration challenge this week is New York City! I've been to New York a few times, when my sister lived there. She's had a much more exotic life than I. She spent five years dancing with the American Ballet Theater, touring the world on pointe shoes. I lived vicariously through her and her long, skinny legs.
I can't think of New York, however, without remembering the morning of September 11, 2001. George was taking a week of leave from work as a B-1 Weapon Systems Officer, and as we watched the towers fall and the fire burn at the Pentagon, he pulled on his flight suit and went back to work. This card is in memory of that day, its loss, and its heroism.
On a much lighter note, my favorite place in New York City is the Cloisters. It's a wonderful museum that houses the Metropolitan Museum of Art's medieval collection. (For deets on my love affair with all things medieval, please read this essay. It's funny. I promise.)
Unfortunately, for clean and simple card inspiration, medieval art is a bit too not clean and simple. So I poked around on the Metropolitan's website and found an image of the little metal buttons you get on admission. I immediately thought of my Hampton Arts Da Vinci alphabet and this card happened.
I hope you'll play along with CAS59. New York is simply loaded with inspiration!
Supplies
stamps: Stampabilities (9-11 stamp); Hampton Arts (alphabet)
ink: palette noir; SU white craft
paper: PTI white; ballet blue
accessories: ribbon, dimensionals; white embossing powder, dimensionals
Lovely cards, both of them very special in their own individual way. I worked for two years in NYC as a young adult, in the garment district, so my memories of the Big Apple are distant & blurry....I couldn't come up with a theme for a card if I had to!!! Hmm, Big Apple....now there's a theme!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great alphabet set! I love that the letter comes with it's own background.
ReplyDeleteNY: I was on a road trip with my kids in July/Aug 2001 and we (they) took a crazy number of pics of the NY skyline as we drove past. It's spooky now to look back at the pics taken just a few days prior to 9/11.
The ribbon on the first card highlights the image so well. Perfection! And oh, my goodness, I NEED that Hampton Arts Da Vinci alphabet.
ReplyDeleteTwo SPECTACULAR cards!
ReplyDeleteEvery day here you present a new The Best. My Wish List is on steroids, I fear.
Thanks.
Both cards are really appealing, I especially like the skyline one, what a great stamp. My girls are off to New York in May with their violin ensemble. Sadly I am not going along this time but I should participate in the Challenge and let New York inspire me.
ReplyDeleteTwo amazing cards. What are your plans for the first one? It's such a striking image, such a vivid memory...
ReplyDeleteThat alphabet stamp is awesome! I'm guessing that set's nowhere near your "might purge" pile. ;)
I puzzled and puzzled over this challenge and just did not have an inkling of an idea that would fly. Of course you would! Nicely done!
ReplyDeleteI especially love the skyline card. As the planes hit and the towers fell, I was refinishing my kitchen cabinets. It was my daughter's very, very first day of school. I also went back to work and it was over a year before the kitchen was put back to rights. Thanks for the lovely card.
ReplyDeleteThanks for including the link to your essay about your love of the medieval. It's going to send me searching the house for our little copy of the Bayeux Tapestry we bought on our visit to Bayeux 30 years ago! The copy is probably too small to see the little vignette of the lusty man. . . . I remember how amazed we were when we visited; we had always thought the famous Bayeux Tapestry was a typical wall-hanging one, not so narrow and a couple hundred feet long! We were very young (sigh).
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful cards.
ReplyDeleteI love them both
