Love...and Not Love

Many, many thanks to all who have commented on yesterday's post. You've given me a lot to think about, and I'm finding that very helpful. If you haven't commented yet, please do weigh in on my question of how you'd like to see me shake things up on Simplicity...or how you would like me to not shake things up.

At least we know that hardly anyone wants to see unicorns and fairy farts. That's a relief.

Today's two cards show two different techniques using an adorable little envelope stamp from Hero Arts' Love Notes set.

First up, a clean-and-simple faux collage inspired by many different real collage cards.

Y'all, this card makes my heart happy. So simple, so sweet, so heart-bling-y!

The second card didn't make my heart so happy. It started off as an attempt to use frisket...a resist liquid that, when it dries, keeps watercolor off the paper. After the paint dries, you can remove the dry frisket gently from the paper, leaving the white space free of paint.

Unfortunately, though I was gentle as can be, the Tim Holtz white watercolor paper peeled off with the frisket, leaving an unsightly mess. I quickly stamped the envelope on a scrap, cut it out, and glued it over the mess. I was quite disappointed, though, that the frisket damaged the paper.

So one version is crisp and clean and fresh, and the other is soft and sweet and romantic. They use essentially the exact same layout, but they certainly have different moods.

Which do you prefer?

Mercy, grace, peace, and love,
Susan

  3. Okay...I did leave a comment on yesterday's post!...♥ Now, I like both these card designs, but LOVE that little watercolored background on the second design! I would NEVER have thought of using a 'tiny bit' of watercolor background instead of a larger wash! See, you just showed me how to bring my fun and 'messy' backgrounds down to a CAS design!♥

  5. I like both. I've never had that issue with frisket but then I've never used it on watercolour paper. I freakin love the stuff. Maybe someone with more experience could offer better insight. Liz

  7. Um, the unicorns, yes-not so sure about fairy farts. Might prove interestuing. both cards are sweet, but given my need for more (just can't pull off CAS), I like the first, especially the cascade of hearts. I still haven't tried the frisket even tho I have it in my stash. Will have to pull it out and give it a try.

  8. First – – I like everything about your posts, And I am very grateful that you took the time to share! Second, my favorite things are probably the explanations about visual design. My second favorite category of postings: your explanations of how you achieve certain results. by the way, I still hope you can share with me how I can express a little gratitude, by sending things to the card shop, thank you.

    1. Sorry for the typos. I blame the vocal recorder!

  9. I like both cards, but I prefer the second because it feels more balanced. In trying to pinpoint why, I think it's because the watercolor grounds the envelope and because the top edge of the watercolor is aligned on the upper third line. The canceled postage stamp on the first card is on the same horizontal third line, but since it's offset, the effect isn't as strong.
