Missing You: A Comparison of Designs

Here are a couple more "missing you" cards I made for the troops. Compare the two and decide which works better. Then scroll down for my analysis and see if you agree with me!

Note the holes in the circles.

Note the missing hexagon.

You're almost there.

I prefer the second card for three reasons:

1. Because the sentiment placement makes more sense in the second card. It seems like an afterthought on the first card. You really could put any sentiment you wanted on that first card, and it would be okay. That can signal a lack of unity in the design.

2. The colors of the second reinforce the sentiment very subtly. I skipped orange on the spectrum. See what I did there? Oh, yeah. The first has a fun color scheme, but it doesn't particularly mean anything.

3. The scale of the sentiment works better with the slightly larger hexagons than it does with the circles. It's just a little too large on the first card.

Do you agree?

  1. Sorry, disagree! Although you list some excellent reasons, I do like the first one better, mainly because I love the circle design. Also, the way everything is sort of forlorn looking in the middle really drives home the message. At least to me:)

  2. I went for the first one - empty circles, almost like thought bubbles, and muted colors. But they both work for me!

  3. Yes, I went for the second one although wasn't sure why, it just 'sat' better with me x

  4. Yup, agreed. The sentiment fits into the gap so neatly, and implies the missing hexagon and the design aligns nicely on the card. Very unified! I always learn something from your posts :)

  5. I picked no. 1 at first because I thought the colours on no. 2 were very bright for a 'miss you' card. But then I read your explanation of the missing orange. Also, I haven't had my coffee this morning. ;-) TFS

  6. I agree with your analysis completely. Though I am ashamed to admit I didn't notice the spectrum color scheme on the second card.

  8. I agree with your analysis, Susan ... yet whilst I appreciate that the colours, dimension and placement are all much more balanced on the second, I prefer the first for some reason ... p'raps it's the empty white space. Anita :)

  9. I would combine the two. I like the sentiment in place of one of the images, but that circle with the hole in the middle is just so perfect for a "missing you" card.

    1. Sharon, I agree. But a different layout and slightly smaller sentiment would be better for the holey circle. Maybe I should get on it!

  10. I agree I like the second one better but probably for different non-artistic reasons. I just like the pop outs and bold colors!

  11. I have to agree that I like the second better. It just looks right to me. I can't express why artistically. I definitely understand what you said, however.
