Goodbye, Daisy

Those of you who've been reading Simplicity for a loooong time might remember 2010 as the year of the Daisy. This little ray of golden sunshine entered our lives eleven years ago, shortly after our first golden retriever died of osteosarcoma.

Look at those ears! I can still smell the puppy breath.

It wasn't too long before she looked like this.

Last Tuesday, we learned that a mass in her throat was probably melanoma and that it had likely already metastasized to her spleen. She was given two weeks but only made it to Friday night, when we drove to the emergency vet after her breathing became labored. The tumor grew so fast. It hadn't been there a month earlier.

Our beautiful Daisy has gone ahead. Our hearts are broken. This happened too fast.

I know many of you love my dog pictures (probably more than the card pictures!). Here's one of my recent favorites of Miss Daisy, taken by my husband in our front yard. She loved soaking up the sun in the grass, wriggling on her back in the grass, and chasing Cooper in the grass.

And here she is begging with her brother from her brother.

And then there's this one of her cuddling up to me on the bed as I read, not-so-subtly begging for attention. Note the line of dialogue on the screen..."What a good girl!"

Daisy was the best girl, a big heart covered in fur.

Grief is love that has nowhere to go. I don't know who said it, but it perfectly sums up how I feel.

Mercy, grace, peace, and most of all, love,

Susan

  7. Oh, Susan. I am so sorry to hear of your loss of Daisy. Tears immediately came to my eyes when I read your post. I grieve with you: I put down my two elderly cats this year, one in January and one in April. I so appreciate your comment that Daisy has gone ahead; I believe we will see our beloved family members again when we cross over. Prayers for eventual healing are coming your way.

  11. Susan... I know your heartbreak more times than I care to remember. My newest one (not my avatar) came about a year ago and is the bestest boy in the world! Memories are cherished and hopefully a new pup will find your open hearts. Much love.

  12. I didn't have my first pet (a wonderful cat) until I was married. When he died suddenly 10 years later, I was stunned at how much I grieved. I had no idea that this cat had walked into my heart and settled there. Took me a full year to make peace that Ralph was gone.
I share that only because so many don't understand how deeply our pets become a true part of our family. I share your loss of this beautiful dog and member of your family. Wishing you all peace at this sad time.

  13. Susan, I am so very sorry to hear about your sweet Daisy! I remember when you got her. She was THE CUTEST puppy! To say that it's devastating to lose a fur baby is an understatement. I often wonder why we keep doing it to ourselves. But a life without pets is unfathomable to us. They bring so much light and joy, love and laughter to our lives! Sending big hugs and lots of prayers as you grieve this sweet, sweet girl!!

  23. Dear Susan,
Just reading anything that is not college class related. You know how it is at the end of a semester. Bedlam! I'm so sorry about Daisy. She was such a beautiful special member of your family. Your family (including Cooper) will miss her but she will always hold that special place in your heart. I remember all the puppy pics and was always glad to see the next installment. She was so special and is waiting for you at the Rainbow bridge. (Now if I can just find my stamps that I purchased for times like these, you may get a card). Furry children have so much love to give us and so many wonderful memories that will sustain you. Prayers for your family.
