City-Slicker Card and a Happy Day

My card for today has a problem. Can you identify it?

What sort of leaves are on this apple tree? Could they be, dare I say, oak? Nature may never have made a tree that looked like this, but I sort of like it anyway. Besides, if I send it to a city slicker, she won't know the difference.

And yes, there are four apples. I tried three, but it really needed the fourth. I contemplated adding a fifth so I'd have the magic odd number, but that felt like too much. So four it is. Or should that be "four are it"? Whatever.

Look and see what I got Tuesday!!!

This was my first SU order out of the new catalog. Y'all may have some idea of the restraint I exercised in getting only two new colors. And two sets. And one punch. Oh the owl called to me, but alas, the butterfly won.

I hope I can play with all these goodies tomorrow. Life has conspired to keep me out of the craft room. MUST do something about that.

What new stuff have you bought recently that is calling to you to play?

  1. Well you could argue that there are only 3 apples on the tree and they do look good with the oak leaves. I love your card :o)

  2. I adore your card...and the fourth apple is perfect! I think sometimes you have to break the rules....if we could say there are any rules (LOL). The most recent thing that I bought was a package of beautiful Metal Flakes (kind of like a variety of gold leafing in one package). And no, I have no idea how I'm going to use them! Have fun with your Stampin' Up! stuff, and thanks for all that you do.

  3. I have an orchard of apple trees and still wouldn't have noticed they were in the wrong tree, probably because whatever you make looks perfect because you made it look perfect. The card NEEDS that red apple below the tree, exactly where it is, of course. Or at least it feels that way to me, and I hadn't stopped to count the apples because when it feels right, it IS right.

My latest toy is a tip about flower soft from Lorrinda. I've been making pseudo flower soft in every color I might ever need it in. Soooooooooo fun! You want a flower soft tip? Ask Lorrinda, #29 on the Challenge list to the right.

  4. I wouldn't have noticed that the apples were on the wrong tree..blame it on being a city girl..the only apples I see are in supermarkets..never seen them on trees!

Me likey those butterflies..I ended up buying around 6 punches the last time I went shopping..

  5. Oh, it looks like you're going to have fun. And your card is wonderful - who cares about the leaves. Every about it is perfect. You may have read that I have made a vow to NOT buy any stamping supplies for one year, except adhesive. Hope I can hold to it.

  6. So funny...I looked at your card for a good time and I did not think of the leaves. I like unrealistic but artisitic. This image is that. Wonderful card. How fun that you have this new stuff to play with. I just bought some new tags from Cuttlebug that cut out and emboss with this new system they came out with. So I am looking forward to trying it out. Have fun with your goodies Susan.

  7. I love your oaky apple tree! I love your particular shades of red and green, too -- very comforting-looking, if that makes any sense!
I got some SU! goodies this week, too -- they're calling my name!

  8. lol you write the funniest things sometimes and I love it :)
yes four apples look good and I loved the leaves too ..
oooooooh SU products .. always wanted to get em but too bad they don't sell them outside the US .. or rather don't ship to the Middle East ..

oh well .. PTI has become my recent fav ..
recently placed a huge $400 worth stamps, dies & cardstock ..
and then saw your post on the "all booked up" set, so went ahead and had to place a new order .. felt bad on placing an order for just a stamp so I added ribbons, rhinestones, and more cardstock & the new everyday treats stamp set with matching dies too ..

I promised myself I'd stop buying new stamp sets but then I have to stop reading blogs in order to do that :S

  9. Sarah, So fun...hope you make it into the craft room this morning...love your card.

I've had this supply for a while: Ranger Distress Inks...they call to me, but intimidate me!!

BTW, four apples are great :) I'm sure people look at my cards all the time wondering why I don't do three :)!

  10. Love your fall cards!
I haven't gotten anything new lately, I'm in a financial crunch. the last thing I remember getting at Michael's was this single stamp with apaganthus (?) flowers on it. I had seen cards by someone on SCS with that motif and loved it. When I finally found it at the store, I felt so lucky! I made some nice thank you cards with it right away.

  11. As usual, your "simple" style just wows me. I now know what I have been looking to emulate. I just bought a Hero Arts, "grid" stamp. I'ma itchin to use it. Saturday morning, my poor honey has to work; I have big plans to spend the whole morning in my craft space with a little laundry in between.

  12. Problem with your card... yeah right! LOL You could do something "wrong" and we would never know!

I like your choice of the new colors and can't wait to see what you do with them!

  13. You do have the magic odd number. Three apples in the tree and one on the ground! Nice card.

  14. hehehe, you are right, a ton of folks would never think about oak leaves and apples!! I am glad you got a few things out of the new catty! I am yet to purchase anything from them. I did, however, go to my LSS and bought my first package of October Afternoon 8x8 paper! It is so pretty I can't wait to use it. I also picked up a few packages of stamps ... of companies that are not on my "usual" list ... I know, I am SoOOOOOoooo bad!!! hehehee!!

  15. Susan, LOL with the 4 apples, oh we do try to stick to the rules, don't we?! And I still couldn't figure out what was wrong with your card. You continue to inspire me to do simple one layer. The owl punch called you, but I have a feeling you will get more mileage out of the butterfly and the smart stamp set that goes with it. I got the owl and he's very cute, but seasonal. I finally got the Bags and Blooms die, but I haven't played with it yet and I just got the Elegant boquet embossing folder and hope to use it on my daughter's wedding invitations for Spring.

  16. You may have 4 apples but they are in groupings of odd--1 on the ground, 3 on the tree, so they read as odd numbers to me....I have some great new stamps to play with...one is a set of clear stamps that are: splats!! Wouldn't have given them a second look until I got to talking to a lady in the aisle at Michaels--she commented to me "don't know why, but I'm drawn to these". We talked about art for a long time--she a true artist while I'm more of a crafter--and when she left I grabbed that last set of splat stamps...they are great for vintage aging--one stamp makes the paper look like someone spilled coffee on it and it left spots-- if stamped with tea dye distress ink. And for Halloween-- done in red-- one of them looks like blood running down the page...but you don't want to use that stamp under a bird...it looks like yuk--bird poop. Sorry for that if it's too graphic.

The other stamp sets that I purchased were also clear. One was a set of 4, each looks like a clipping from a Christmas holiday advert. Love that.

The third set was owls, owls and more owls...so cute..one is in a tree peeking out of his hole. They have party hats and balloons and are different sizes--by Hampton Art. The other two sets are by Reflections.

I do love playing with new stamps!!

  17. I grew up on an apple orchard in Ontario so noticed that the leaves were wrong right away - but I like the card anyway! It's good to see that, if they are placed right, an even number will sometimes work as I occasionally find the same thing but think "oh no, it has to be an odd number".

I have two new stamp sets calling to me - PTI's Tea for Two and Magenta's Wild Berries. It's supposed to rain all weekend so my fall gardening will have to wait and I can give myself a few hours of happy stamping instead.

  18. Hi Susan, well, oak, apple it's all about design, right? Love it, whatever leaves you have:0) xx

  19. I agree with Cheryl -- 3 odd in the tree, and 1 odd on the ground is perfect! Anybody who'd complain about an oak tree sporting some apples on a card would surprise me. Your card is lovely. Oh I love your new package! - the CS looks lovely, and that Christmas stamp is a beautiful one. And it has that elusive "ground" stamp at the base of it. I could get it for that alone, never mind loving the rest of the stamp.

  20. I also think the three apples on the tree work with the one on the ground because the lone apple grounds your design. I bought the same two SU! colors recently and love, love, love them.

  21. You were SO good with your SU order... I am very impressed. :) My order is on the way, and since my demo was offering a free upgrade to expedited shipping, I hope to have some new goodies in my hands early next week! In the meantime, I have a new "bargain" stamp from Michael's that I have plans to use for the current OLW challenge.
I really like your hybrid tree card! And I'd say, it must be some pesky squirrels, storing oak leaves in an apple tree! ;)

  22. Oooh ... I can't wait to see what you make with your new Christmas stamp set - TFS and congrats on such restraint, LOL!

  23. Your card is fantastic and I just laughed out loud over your word play. I'm one of those city clickers who wouldn't know the difference about leaves, even though I love nature!

In my SU order that arrived this week, I received eight things: cardstock, dimensionals, rhinestones, envelopes AND one punch, just like you! I caved and bought the two-step bird punch...finally, so I'm looking forward to playing with that.

    Have a lovely weekend!

  24. i love your tree, it is called artistic license.....and it works! the latest thing i have going is i bought some rubber stamps from SU, love the roses from "elements of style", just gorgeous...started a new etsy shop and have been busy stamping! so far, so good! ack, i must be crazy!

  25. I've recently been working with Cosmo Cricket papers. Delovely, Togetherness and Pixielicious.... I just can't resist their papers.

  26. Hi, Susan. Yes, I noticed the oak leaves on your apple tree, but that is only because I am afflicted with perfectionism and I've been stamping a lot of oak leaves lately. I still think it is a beautiful card. You have red in 5 places, so that makes the 4 apples ok!

I love your new supplies. Those are 2 of my favorite new colors. I have bought a lot of new stamps lately (like I need more!), and I also got some Shimmer Spritz that I need to break out of the box. I still have to get my owl punch idea onto a card, too.

  27. Yep... city folk probably wouldn't know the difference :-) I often contemplate the number of images/embellishments to try to make them an odd number but sometimes an even number just works.

I got my SU order this week too. I had ordered all the new colors of cardstock in July. This time I got all the new color markers and a couple of ink refills (so I can make my own pads). None of the images have really wowed me yet.
