CAS64 Happy Birthday, Miss Boo

This week's challenge is in honor of Miss Boo (Jen, the woman who runs the challenge). She likes orange and it's her birthday, so the challenge is to make a CAS birthday card with orange.

Yeah!

For the first card, I used the most basic CAS layout ever, but made the focal point an orange library card. *squeal* I love library cards. I miss library cards. A whole generation is growning up never having signed a library card, not even knowing what a library card IS! How totally sad is that?

But this card isn't sad. It's very, very happy and would love to accompany a birthday gift of a book, don't you think?

A paper clip with ribbon! Ohmygosh, this card makes me totally happy!

The second card borrows its layout from Papercrafts Go-To Sketches. I would never in a million years come up with this, which is the whole point of using sketches...to do new things and learn stuff.

This layout uses the design idea that angles love curves. All the right angles on this card are offset by the round flower and card. The contrast increases the visual interest. Pretty cool, huh?

Please note that I used a giant prima...so outside my box...with a giant rhinestone...so inside my box. And the box is round this time, which sort of makes me feel like I'm in a foreign country and don't speak the language.

You want to know my favorite part of this card? Can you guess? It's those little squares. I love them irrationally and will be using them again. For sure.

If you'd like to play along with CAS64, upload your birthday card using orange to SCS using the keyword CAS64. And please tell Jen happy birthday because she's amazing.

  3. Oh orange-ness! These cards are awesome. I love library cards, we used to live in the library. But sadly yes, my son doesn't know what a library card is. So many treasures lost. And a circle card-wow!

  6. Love the library card, Susan, but loooove the second card! How creative! How unusual! Wouldn't you love to receive that for a b-day?! I also love the orange; it's so bright and cheerful. Very different card for you, and I'll bet for all of us! Yay for branching out!

  7. Marty, the squares are punched cardstock using a 1/4" punch.

  8. Susan - these are fantastic. I'm not a big fan of orange, and most definitely dont know how to work with round anything, but these cards ROCK!!! I can't wait to try doing something like it.

I gotta tell you, your blog is always the first I go to with my mornin coffee. You're a great way to start my day! Thanks for all you do.

  9. I'm in love with your library card!! Is that a stamp? If so, who makes it???? The circle card is simply amazing as well. Might have to give that one a whirl myself. Thanks for the inspiration!!

  10. You are so right about library cards! And that one looks awesome on the card. Your round card is spectacular!! I also love your little squares but that large rectangle of orange is what sets the whole card up for success!! It looks like a piece of cardstock?? but it could be a masked rectangle which would look cool too!!

  11. Like I said, I loooove that second card. I'm wondering --- what's the circumference of that large circle? Will it fit into a standard envelope?

  12. Sue, it's 4.25" in diameter, so it will fit in a standard A2 envelope.

  13. I saw these yesterday on SCS - I just love your round card - it is perfect in every way!

  14. That first card is the best CAS card I've seen in a while! That ribbon and paperclip are PERFECT!!

  15. I'm not really a fan of orange, but these are delightful! You know I love a good library card!

  16. I love, love, love that library card stamp - now I must find my own. I can set cute little card sets made up with it!!!

  17. I just LOVE the round card - I can't wait to have a go at one like it! :-)

  18. Great cards! You're totally outside all of my boxes with these, too - round card, huge flower, paperclip, ORANGE. And yet, they're completely fabulous. And yes, a generation that's never seen a library card makes me sad, too. Of course, I say that as I'm about to walk out the door and go to B&N...

  19. Paper clips on cards seem so out of context for me, but on this card it is perfect. Love it with the touch of gingham. The circle card is spectacular, absolute perfection. Do you use the coluzzle system to cut your circles?

  20. Nancy, I use the Creative Memories circle cutting system, which is really easy.

  21. As a (former) teacher-librarian, I LOVE your first card... even in orange! ;) If I'd seen that stamp in a store, I pbly wouldn't have bought it, as I would never have come up with such a perfect use for it.
You seem to be answering a lot of questions about your second card, but here's one more (sorry...): how and where does it open? Most circular cards I've seen have a "flat" side, if you kwim.

  22. This is great. Those little squares are perfection.

  23. OMG!!!!!!!! That round card is to die for! When I bought the magazine this weekend, I actually thought to myself "how will Lateblossom interpret these?" and now I see. This card ROCKS! And, so do you.

  24. I remember library cards. In fact my local, rural and somewhat out-of-date library still uses library cards. Your card is cute with the paperclipped on ribbon.

My fave part of your round card is also the row of little squares. It really does add visual interest.

  25. Librarian here. My sister once joked that every book she opened in the middle school library had my name on the card. Patron privacy issues these days make the cards a no no.

Orange cards make me happy. I took the plunge and uploaded my first CAS card today on SCS. I'm ThatGirl on SCS.

I had to share the card I made with your inspiration----thanks so much!

i LOVE how your brain works.

Thanks for sharing your awesome gifts! Peggy

  27. "Patron privacy issues" in a library? Who woulda thunk it? Fortunately my tiny wonderful rural library still uses cards and still has the library-scent from "back in the day." One of the few treasures of living in an area that's about 30 years behind the times.

    Love todays' cards!

    Thanks, Susan

  28. Orange is my new favourite colour! I agree the best part of this gorgeous circular card are the squares.

  29. I totally agree about the things modern children are missing in life ... I think they call it progress!!
Love both your cards ... orange is growing on me!
My eye was immediately drawn to your tiny squares on the circle card ... your design is wonderful, love it! Might even try one my-self but may be not orange even though yours IS gorgeous ;)

  31. Yea, I love library cards too. I've always wanted a stamp like this and scolded myself with "get out your ruler, you lazy thing". Of course I never do, which is why I would "need" a stamp like this. You make it look great, and yes, what a great card to go with a book gift!

  32. Susan, thank you for the information on the circle cutting system. I just upgraded from plates to a compass. Once I am back working, I hope to buy something more professional.

  33. Nancy cracks me up! I'm still on plates because I didn't think of a compass.
